How to replace the battery inside the server?

Hello,

I've two servers Dell PowerEdge 2500 whom I would like to replace the motherboard battery before it was death.

If this battery goes down, I think the server loses the date and time, but, does it lost the BIOS and RAID settings too?

What is the best way to replace the motherboard battery?
Is it better to replace it when the OS server is running or when the server is power off?
Do we have to make the replacement proccess so quickly as possible to not lost some data/settings (BIOS/RAID)?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Chris

The proper way to replace the motherboard battery is to power off the server and drain the remaining power out of the server by holding the power button in for 30 seconds while the server is unplugged.  Then physically replace the battery and power on as normal.

As far as the possibility of losing you data/settings. Depending on the RAID controller you have installed on the server it will normally have a RAID Battery attached that powers the RAID memory and keeps the settings cached.  This should not be affected by the replacement of the motherboard battery.

The RAID battery is typically connected by a cable to the RAID controller card or riser.

The motherboard battery (CMOS) is a small coin cell battery about the size of a nickel.
