HP/Dell Hardware Comparison

I work for an IT consulting company, and the 15th of next week HP/Compaq is coming to do a demonstration on the superiority of their hardware over Dell's. They are inviting all of our customers to convince them to stay with HP instead of going to Dell hardware. Specifically, they will be comparing the following server models:

HP DL585  vs.  Dell PowerEdge 6650

HP DL360
      &          vs.  Dell PowerEdge 1850
HP DL145

I have always used and prefer Dell equipment, and I was wondering if there were any comparitive studies or if you could provide some information on the bias of HP's study.

Thanks,
Jon

The studies I used to get rid of Compaq and HP were all related to after sales on site support.

We had both.

Typically for a major system they would berate us or tell us that it was our fault when a hard drive failed or power supply when poof.

Many communication problems made their 4 hour, 24 x 7 support into more like 4 or 5 day support.

Their claim was that they returned our phone calls so that was responce within 4 hours.
NOT!

HP also has very strict policies on non HP parts. They will paint you into a corner by telling you that you void your warranty with non HP Parts. (This is illegal per the Magnison Moss Warranty Act.) Compaq goes so far as to make it so that NON COMPAQ boards
will not POST or boot in their systems. Then there are the infamous 1/3 height floppys and non industry standard cables to all drives.

Aka Adaptec scsi cards. If you put a generic adaptec in it will say This is not a compaq part and then halt!

Things like that after many many many bad experiences made both HP and Compaq persona no grata in my enterprise. We started retireing and replacing with dell around 1990 and have never looked back.

If you want good support you gotta pay the gold for gold support. Otherwise ya gets choppled liver.

Here is another tool in your arsenal. I went to www.teltechassets.com. A supplier of used hardware in Canada.

I asked them for a server. the only thing they have in stock are HP's and Compaqs. I told them I wanted a Dell server. They said they cannot keep them in stock. Everyone wants them and nobody wants the others.

You do the math. Dell are in demand, Compac and HP are killing themselves by producing inferior products. Don't get me wrong I used to love HP hardware....but they are not up to snuff these days.

I don't know of any particular white papers or case studies, but I do know that many major application vendors (e.g. Microsoft, Oracle, Peoplesoft) have collaborated with Dell to produce certified hardware/software solutions for their most high-profile enterprise products.  Such alliances show that Dell hardware is a serious player.  While Dell does not provide any traditional mainframe type hardware like HP/Compaq/IBM, they have chosen to take a different route with distributed high performance computing using the x86 architecture, which is more cost effective for typical enterprise applications.

We started replacing our HP/Compaq equipment about 6 years ago and we couldn't be happier.  Dell does not suffer from the proprietary hardware limitations that the big companies impose on you.  And from my experience of installing and managing 80 servers, the Dell server line provides equal if not better performance than its HP/Compaq counterparts, all at a much better price point.  You can expect very good support as well.

If you are going to compare the DL145 to anything, you need to compare to the PowerEdge SC 1425 which is a dual processor, high performance, non-redundant system that better matches the DL145.
