I'm facing the same issue, tried everything and another one bricked, was working fine before the update. I really don't believe the only solution Dell tell us, is to replace the mobo, In 2022 still no solution, I'll not use Dell products anymore. I'm migrating my environment to HP. Never had any issue with HP.

I also have a R720 with an failed iDRAC 7 firmware update. Currently the system is still running (Windows Server), but the iDRAC is no longer responding (Web UI not accessible, no ping/link on iDRAC ethernet port).

Since this is a productive system, I'm afraid the server won't boot back into Windows again, once I shutdown/restart to see, if I can reset/re-flash iDRAC in BIOS.

Can you guys confirm, that I will at least be able to boot back into Windows, even if the fans are at 100%? Or will I end up having a completely bricked server after I shutdown/restart?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

under this Link

https://dell.to/3CWhxTI

you could find different ways to reset the iDRAC most of the time it did not brick the server it only solves failures like yours.

Do you have any further questions?

@Dell-Martin S

I'm currently considering to migrate the data to another server, so I would have a fallback in case the server doesn't come up anymore after the shutdown/restart.

Do you know how much it would cost to order a new mainboard for the R720 (with the warranty expired)?

Hi,

i depends on you if you want to use the iDRAC Module features and try a restart that sometimes causes a tougher failure(the risk is minimal, but it does exist.) and you have to pay for a new Motherboard. I know only, after checking this with our point of need sales team, that in Central Europe the parts are still available or you accept the actual status and do the reboot later when you have redundancy.

Sorry but this decision I could not give you any 100% guarantee that nothing happens.

@Dell-Martin S

I've already tried holding down the i button. The only effect was, that the server name, that was shown on the display, disappeared (while the display is still on) and the i button is shining blue permanently ever since. I cannot even ping the iDRAC address and the ethernet port in the back has no link. So the reset obviously did not work.

Some other methods (RACADM/WebUI) require the iDRAC device to at least be accessible, which it is not.

I tried installing the iDRAC Service module, but the service cannot start after installation. Maybe because OpenManage ist already installed. I'm not sure about that.

Lastly I would have to reboot and go to BIOS, which I'm afraid will result in the OS no longer booting and the server being bricked. The warranty has been expired for a while and the R720 has been EOL for a long time (we bought ours in 2013), so changing the motherboard will be difficult I guess.

Sorry but I had no clue how much it will cost, you could call your tech support team they could contact the local sales team for the exact price in your country.

FYI:

After migrating everything to a different server, I today restarted the R720 (with failed iDRAC 7) to see, what would happen. It was still able to boot to the OS, but it took a while and one would have to press F1 ("Continue boot") several times. The fans would go up and stay that way, but it wasn't as loud as I had expected. I wasn't able to reset or re-flash the iDRAC using a SD-card.

After ~30 minutes I noticed a burning smell, so I assume one of the server's hardware parts started overheating/burning. I then turned off the server and disconnected the power supply. So be careful everyone and make sure you have a plan B for the data/services!
