iDRAC Enterprise setup

Hi

iDRAC setup is a bit of mystery for me and would appreciate some help.

Brand new Dell T420 came preinstalled with SBS 2011. SBS 2011 is configured and server boots into it fine.

No iDRAC configuration has been made so far. Server is using NIC 1 with IP 192.168.1.10 and connected to the internet router 192.168.1.1. I would like to share iDRAC on the NIC 1.

What is the step by step method to configure iDRAC from here please?

Thanks

Regards

PS: The internet router is configured to forward all remote access traffic to the server NIC 1 on 192.168.1.10.

Hi yahya01,

You can use iDRAC Setting Utility for initial configuration of iDRAC. Reboot the server and press "F2" during POST. From there you can configure iDRAC IP address and also configure iDRAC to use LOM1 for communication. For more details refer "Setting Up iDRAC IP Using iDRAC Settings Utility" section of iDRAC7 User Guide. User Guide is available at following link

Hi Shine

Thanks. Let's say if I select 192.168.1.100 for iDRAC; since internet router is set to forward all remote access traffic to server's NIC on 192.168.10, how is iDRAC going to pick up the traffic?

Thanks

yahaya01,

There is no need to configure router to redirect traffic. System automatically redirects the traffic. iDRAC and LOM1 will have separate MAC address for communication so even though both share same LOM port all traffic will  be redirected appropriately. Only thing you have to do is configure iDRAC with LOM1 and set an IP address. Everything should work fine.

HI

iDRAC now has ip 192.168.1.8, Lifecycle Controller has ip 192.168.1.9, both on the same NIC as the SBS which has ip 192.168.1.10 on the same NIC1. However since the broadband router is configured to route all remote access traffic to 192.168.1.10, only SBS is accessible via NIC 1. How can I choose which of the SBS or iDRAC I can access at any point?

Thank

I think our confusion on this end is why you have remote traffic routed to one specific address. This really shouldnt be necessary since the correct device will get the correct traffic. try removing the routing to the .10 to see if everything works normally.

Hi Rey

Many thanks. iDRAC7 is now accessible. The only problem is that in console the keyboard does not work. Mouse is fine though. This means I cannot login to the server within console. I have tried several times to reconnect but no luck.

Thanks once again.

That's odd, try this, power down the system, pull power cords, let sit for 30 seconds, plug back in, but don't power the system on until the front lcd panel becomes active. If the keyboard still doesnt respond, its probly something external to the system.
