1. Review your RAID configuration and check if you have dedicated hot spare drive.
2. Is new drive DELL branded and has Dell firmware installed? Is it recognized inside iDRAC and status of drive is correct/healthy (check on iDRAC -> storage -> physical disk -> details)?
The drive is Dell branded and is recognized by the iDRAC (it shows status as Ready and the indicator light is green). I'll try your suggestions when I can bring the server down.
Thanks for the pointer to the other article. Carrying out the power drain resolved it (though the instructions are slightly incorrect - after plugging the power cables back in, the server boots up, and doesn’t allow the 5 - 10 minute wait noted there).

Hi Des,

3. Try to reset iDRAC and check job status after
4. Try to remove and install drive again
