idrac Virtual Console + CentOS 7 kernel 4.4 = black screen
Hello
Please help me solving problems
We have several servers Dell PowerEdge R610/620.
Now, I have the task install on this servers CentOS 7 with kernel 4.4.
First time i'm upgrade all firmware on last version.
Second install CentOS 7 in UEFI mode
Idrac virtual console worked.
Then i'm upgrade kernel in CentOS 7 on 4.4 version with help this comand:
rpm --import https://www.elrepo.org/RPM-GPG-KEY-elrepo.org
rpm -Uvh https://www.elrepo.org/elrepo-release-7.0-3.el7.elrepo.noarch.rpm
yum --enablerepo=elrepo-kernel install -y kernel-lt
grub2-set-default 0
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
systemctl reboot
After restart virtual concole work on UEFI loading, but after select kernel 4.4 on grub virtual console have only black screen.
But SSH work fine, and i can use host!
Why this ?
I try this:
1. Disabled C1E and C state option on CPU
2. I try restart idrac after load OS
3. I try use VNC mode console, but there was identical problem, black screen on OS
Attention on kernel 3 all work fine!
I find same R610 host with CentOS 7 kernel 4, but with BIOS mode and old firmware on this hosts virtual console fine too!
How fix this problem, how fix on UEFI mode ?
Now i have this host with problem:
PowerEdge R620
Operating System CentOS Linux
OS Version release 7.7.1908 (Core) Kernel 4.4.219-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
BIOS Version 2.9.0
Firmware Version 2.65.65.65
Lifecycle Controller Firmware 2.65.65.65

Are you only having issues when using kernel 4?

There is blackscreen only after loading OS, before idrac console is work in dell system loading and UEFI.
Problem begin after pick kernel 4.4 on grub menu

I haven't been able to identify the change that might be responsible for this. You can quite likely get it to work, but I suspect that you'll need to try alternate video drivers.

Unfortunately, you'll need to locate a driver on your own. There is not one that I can recommend for your configuration.

Hmm..maybe i found solution

Now, i was setup new host on CentOS7 kernel 4.4 and find interesting grub settings for reset video driver settings.
I change comand rhgb quiet on nomodeset in grub config
After save config video in idrac console and VNC work!
I will try repeat this solution on another Dell server.

Really glad you got it working! I'll have to hang onto these boot parameters, in case I see someone else with this issue.

Hello, I am trying to install Centos7 to a dell computer that I recently purchased. But when I click "install Centos 7", screen turns into black and nothing happens. Can you please help me? I am having a trouble to understand what is wrong.

Hi, thank you for choosing Dell. Given that your idrac virtual console has no issues, you might need to change VGA mode on Cent OS.
