Memory issue R710

Hi,

We  have a Power edge R710, we want to add more memory to this server, right now it has 16 GB memory. we did bought 2X 8 GB memory. yesterday for the first time I opened the server (it is in a rermote data center) and findout that there is still 2 X 3 empty memory slots for each processors. and also findout that the current memry modules are 8 X 2 GB memory. I did try dirrent combenation of empty slots (of the 2X3 empty slots ) but or the server wont start or it starts but did not recognized the new memories.

Question:

Can we mix the 8GB memory module  with the 2 GB memory module? or we have to buy only 2 GB memory? or we can replace all the existing 2 GB memories with new 8 gb Memories modules?

Thanks

No.  You have 2GB UDIMMs and 8GB RDIMMs.   You cannot mix them.  They have to be all RDIMMs or all UDIMMs or the server will not start or POST.

The system contains 18 memory sockets split into two sets of nine sockets, one set for each processor. Each nine-socket set is organized into three channels with three memory sockets per channel.

For systems with two processors:

  • Single-rank and dual-rank RDIMMs of sizes 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB are supported for a total of up to 288 GB.
  • Quad-rank RDIMMs (two per channel) are supported for a total of up to 192 GB.
  • 1 GB and 2 GB UDIMMs are supported for a total of up to 24 GB
  • DIMM population for UDIMMs and Quad-rank DIMMs is two per channel.
  • Support for up to 24 GB of UDIMM memory (with 12 2-GB UDIMMs, limit of two DIMMs per channel)

  • UDIMMs and RDIMMs cannot be mixed
  • The Dell™ PowerEdge R710 (2S 2U)memory system supports up to 18 DIMMs. DIMMs must be installed in each channel starting with the DIMM farthest from the processor. Population order will be identified by the silkscreen designator and the System Information Label (SIL) located on the chassis cover.
    • Memory Optimized: {1, 2, 3}, {4, 5, 6}, {7, 8, 9}
    • Advanced ECC or Mirrored: {2, 3}, {5, 6}, {8, 9}
    • Quad Rank or UDIMM: {1, 4}, {2, 5}, {3, 6}
