Memory sharing

Hello

I have Dell powerEdge r420.

I have 4 X 16gb RAM sticks and also 2 X 8gb RAM sticks.

I have 2 cpu.

What is the best memory sharing between the processors ?

Should i split the RAM to 4X16gb on one cpu and 2X8gb to the 2nd cpu ? and also on what DIMM slots should i insert the memory sticks ?

Yanwai,

You can indeed mix the dimms in the server, but would need to place the larger dimms. This is due to mixed configurations, and the population order requires the largest rank and density DIMM be placed first. Now where you are going to run into issues is the # of dimms, as the memory channels must match. SO you would either need to add a couple of the  8gb dimms, or use less 16gb dimms. If you place 16GB in A1, A2, B1, and B2, then you can place 8gb dimms in A4-A5 as well, which would require 4 8GB.

Hope this helps

Now depending on if the ranking and everything match, you can try the 16gb dimms in A1, A2, B1 and B2, then the 8GB in A4 and B4, or you can try them in A3 and B3 as well.
