Memory Upgrade Help Needed Urgently

Hi Everyone,

I have been going around in circles with Dell Sales Team and would hope to find the correct information here.

I have 3 Dell r610 servers currently populated with (12) G484D Dual In-line Memory Module, 4G 1066, 2RX4X72, 8, 240, Regulatory sticks.   The service tag for one of the servers is [Service Tag removed per privacy policy], the other two are exactly the same and purchased on the same day.

I wanted to upgrade the servers to 96GB of ram using 16gb sticks, on the website when searching for memory the only 16gb stick to show up is  Dell Part# : A6996789, but it states in the description "**Please note that PowerEdge Servers must have a Westmere or new CPU configuration to be compatible with this memory.**"

These servers are the generation before westmere (X5550 processors)...  Are there any 16gb sticks available for my servers?  Using the 8GB sticks is going to be way too expensive plus leaves no room to increase ram later without replacing all the slots again.

Thanks for the help!

Just purchase them from Crucial - they are guaranteed compatible (and are probably cheaper).  Then you don't have to try to navigate the Dell Sales machine:

The memory at Dell.com that you referenced doesn't mention "Westmere" anywhere and lists it as compatible with the R610 ... not sure what the confusion is, but it should work as well:

Besides, it also shows as being out of stock.

This is why I say "you don't have to try to navigate the Dell Sales machine" ... shopping Dell.com is ridiculously complicated and frustrating.

If you MUST purchase them FROM Dell, then call them (or just purchase them ... there is no reason - nothing built into the memory - that would make these not work).

You don't have to purchase "certified Dell products" directly from Dell.  You can purchase "certified Dell products from MANY retailers/resellers/suppliers, often for much cheaper than Dell charges you to buy direct:

Your Technical Account Manager or dedicated Sales Rep can often help simplify the purchasing process too.

I'm not buying the memory from Dell, but need the correct part number, and although I agree with you that it makes absolutely no sense why Part No. A6996789 would not work I still need confirmation from Dell why they stated on their site that it needs to be westmere or newer architecture.  If its an error thats fine but I still need confirmation.. our account manager is taking a bit to confirm so I figured I would post here to see if anyone knows if there is some sort of wierd issue with the motherboard or bios preventing what seems to be the correct memory from working.

Hi Thanks for the reply,

Not sure how the product description is different than mine, also my price is lower and says in stock.. take a look at this link...

Maybe just an issue with Dell website?  I've been waiting for confirmation from Dell for a few days as they don't seem to be able to figure it out either.

Would get Crucial or another brand but customer wants certified dell products only.

You may get an answer that "yes it will work, regardless of what the site says" or "no it won't work, like the site says (and regardless of the compatibility list)", but you are unlikely to get an answer as to "why" the Dell site says it (especially on one page and not the other) - there is too little connection/communication between segments of the company to expect a clear answer for that.  Inside and outside experience talking.

Good luck.

Just as Theflash1932 thought that RAM is fully compatible and there is an error on their site.

Thanks for the Help Flash
