Memory upgrade - No video output.. PLEASE help!

I have a PowerEdge R710 that came with 16GB of RAM. ( 8 x 2Gb ). I just bought two Kingston 8Gb DDR3 PC3-12800 240-Pin DIMM sticks and tried to put it in but get no video. Do i have bad memory sticks or am I putting it in the wrong area?

Both sides of the CPU are allocated like this (from left to right):

empty (furthest from CPU)

empty

empty

2

2

empty

2

2

empty (closest to CPU)

No matter what combination I use, I can get the video to turn on unless I remove the new sticks and insert back the old ones in their default slots. Please help!

AndyH28,

The issue you are running into is that the server is currently operating in Advanced ECC mode. In Adv ECC, the channel farthest from the processor is not utilized and the two channels closest to the processor are combined to form one 128-bit channel. Memory modules must be identical in size, speed, and technology in corresponding slots. So mixing the 2GB and 8GB dimms in this mode will not work. What you could do, to utilize the 8GB dimms, is to switch to Optimizer Mode in the Memory Settings section of the BIOS. Then switch the dimms to 8GB in A1/B1, the 2GB dimms in A4/A7/B4/B7. That configuration will allow you to use all the dimms and complete POST. When you switch to Optimizer, if you prefer, you can also test just the 8GB dimms in A1/B1 to test if they are compatible dimms as well.

Let me know the results.

I have 2GB sticks in A2,A5,A3,A7 and B2,B5,B3,B7.

I tried switching to Optimizer mode in the BIOS, then put in the 8Gb sticks in A1,B1 but the same result. No video output at all.

Did you try the 8GB dimms alone in the server or were the 2GBs also installed? I ask as I never confirmed with you if the 2GB dimms were Rdimms or Udimms, which all the dimms must be one or the other. Also, could you confirm the part number for the 8GB dimms, so I can check to make sure it is compatible.

Hey Chris, This is the memory I purchased: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Q4VCDM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I didn't check with the new memory installed alone.
