Memory Upgrades on PE1950's

Hello,

I have a project to upgrade 4 of my cluster servers to have 16 gig of memory.  They have a verying amount of memory now, from 4 gig to 12 gig.  Are there any special tricks to this upgrade that I should know about before I begin?

Thanks,

Make sure you purchase guaranteed compatible memory. Crucial's front page can guide you to compatible memory and list prices, but you can also check Dell (they are sometimes fairly competitively priced). Kingston also has a memory selector, but I don't believe they will sell directly from their site, so you end up having to go to other vendors and look for that specific memory.

Keep in mind the following:

PowerEdge 1950 Memory Population Rules

  • A minimum of two identical Fully Buffered DIMMs (FBDs) must installed.
  • DIMM sockets must be populated by lowest number first in pairs. Example: Populate socket 1 and 2 and then sockets 3 and 4.
  • FBDs must be installed in pairs of matched memory size, speed, and technology, and the total number of FBDs in the configuration must total 2,4, or 8.
  • For best system performance, all FBDs should be identical memory size, speed, and technology.
  • Memory sparing and memory mirroring require 8 FBDs, and all FBDs must be of identical memory size, speed, and technology.
  • Memory sparing and memory mirroring cannot be implemented at the same time.
  • Use only qualified FBDs. FBDs can be either single-ranked or dual-ranked. FBDs marked with a 1R are single-ranked and modules marked with a 2R are dual-ranked.

Thanks to both flash and dev mgr for your replies!  All purchased DIMM'S are from Dell so I'm pretty confident that's not going to be an issue.  It was good to be reminded that the lowest number need to be placed in 1, 2, 3, and 4, as I might have messed that up.

Thanks again!

Not even close ... 64GB is the max ... and only if you have version II or III.  Version I only supports up to 32GB.  You can identify your version by a II or III in the upper-left corner of the front chassis, or you can identify it in OpenManage under System.
