More memory on a r710 server

Hi, I have a dell r710 server with 32 gb with 4gb mem. I currently have 4 8gb memorys that I want to put in this server to take it to 64 gb. Is there a way of installing this 8gb mem with the current 4gb mem that are now in the server.

Thanks, sorry for the english, I'm from Argentina.

Hello Bruno

I suspect your current DIMM are populated in these slots:

1,2,4,5

You should be able to put the 8GB DIMMs in:

7,8

There are a lot of population rules. I can't tell you for sure if it will work if I don't have all of the specifications of the memory, but as long as there are no population rules being broken then they should work in the slots I outlined. You have to match the memory across the lanes, so the above slots would be on both the A and B side.

Thanks

Hola Bruno,

I assume and hope you have two processor in your PowerEdge. If you don't have two processors then it's not possible to install all the modules.

Anyway,  first set the memory mode to "OPTIMIZER" in the BIOS then follow the order mentioned below -

  • Config for 2 processors -
    • 8GB modules in A1, A2, B1, B2.
    • 4GB modules in A4, A7, A5, A8, B4, B7, B5, B8.

Note** This config should work but it depends on the memory specs.

  • Config for single processor.
    • 8GB modules in A1, A2, A3
    • 4GB modules in A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9 .

Note** If you have single processor you will have to exclude one 8GB and 2 4GB modules because all the channels should have identical configuration. This config should work but again, it depends on the memory specs.

Hope the suggestion works for you. Let us know how it works out. Good Luck. :emotion-21::emotion-5:
