No options for System Setup on post and Lifecycle Controller crashes

I have a PowerEdge R720 that will not give me the option to enter the System Setup on post.  The system enters the Lifecycle Controller automatically (only option) and attempts to apply updates briefly for 2 seconds and then the server powers off.

I got to this point because I was attempting to set the iDRAC Express as part prerequisite of a rolling O/S upgrade from 2012 R2 to 2016 using Hyper-V's Virtual Machine Manager.  Once I set the DRAC, I lost network connectivity to the server.  I could never figure out how to get my network connections back so I reset the DRAC (after clearing the settings to no avail), unplugged the power, and drained any power left by holding in the power button.  After doing those steps, I no longer had the option to enter the System Setup on post nor any other typical options (F2 - System Setup, F10 - System Services, F11 - BIOS Boot Manager, F12 - PXE Boot).  They system just says it's "Entering Lifecycle Controller" shortly after pressing the power button, checking the memory, and initializing the DRAC.

I've tried unsuccessfully to boot from a USB and a DVD with the bootable ISO of the Dell PE720 drivers.

I'm wondering if the system is bricked.  Any ideas?

Hi,

The main board might be in trouble.

Are you able to ping the iDRAC? If you are able to manage to set the IP previously, if not try pinging the default IP 192.168.0.120.

Alternative, try booting after remove all the components, except:

  • One Power Supply
  • Control Panel (for power button functionality)
  • Working cable connection between control panel and system board
  • One Processor (CPU) in socket CPU1 (minimum for troubleshooting)
  • One Memory Module (DIMM) installed in socket A1
  • System Board
  • Backplane (for R720xd control panel connection)
