Hello Gizzo

I doubt that both DIMMs are bad, but that is a possibility. I think the issue is with the rank of the memory. The system is not validated to use dual rank registered 4GB DIMM's. The validated 4GB RDIMMs for this server are quad rank. Just because something is not validated or supported does not necessarily mean it will not work, but since the DIMMs are not properly detected it is likely a compatibility issue. Here is a listed of the supported DIMM specifications for the T310:

Unbuffered

  •     Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
  •     Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
  •     Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
  •     Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
  •     Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 4GB DIMM, (post-RTS)
  •     Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 4GB DIMM, (post-RTS)

Registered

  •     Registered, DDR3 1066 1GB DIMM, Single Rank
  •     Registered, DDR3 1333 1GB DIMM, Single Rank (post-RTS)
  •     Registered, DDR3 1066 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
  •     Registered, DDR3 1333 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank
  •     Registered, DDR3 1066 4GB DIMM, Quad Rank
  •     Registered, DDR3 1333 4GB DIMM, Quad Rank
  •     Registered, DDR3 1066 8GB DIMM, Quad Rank

Thanks

However the Dell T310 technology guide 02152010 states in section 7.2 dimms supported;

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following DIMMs are supported:

• Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 1GB DIMM, Single Rank

• Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 1GB DIMM, Single Rank

• Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank

• Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank

• Unbuffered, DDR3 1066 4GB DIMM, Dual Rank

• Unbuffered, DDR3 1333 4GB DIMM, Dual Rank

• Registered, DDR3 1066 1GB DIMM, Single Rank

• Registered, DDR3 1333 1GB DIMM, Single Rank

• Registered, DDR3 1066 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank

• Registered, DDR3 1333 2GB DIMM, Dual Rank

• Registered, DDR3 1066 4GB DIMM, Quad Rank

• Registered, DDR3 1066 8GB DIMM, Quad Rank

Registered, DDR3 1333 4GB DIMM, Dual Rank will be available Summer 2010.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That last line would imply that registered 4GB dual rank will be supported. I have the latest BIOS so it is reasonable to assume that these new dimms should now be supported. Was there a later amendment to the technology guide that now states that these are not supported ?

Hello Gizzo

Yes, there is a dual rank 4G DIMM that was added to the compatibility list last year. This does not change my conclusion that it is a compatibility issue. It may not specifically be a rank issue causing the compatibility problem, but it still appears to be a compatibility problem.

If you do not believe it is a compatibility issue then I would recommend that you contact the manufacturer to have the DIMMs replaced.

Thanks
