PE1800 Server memory upgrade issues

Hi,

I have a PowerEdge 1800 server with 2GB RAM. My office recently procured another 2GB RAM to be put into the server.

I found that the RAM in the server is single channel while the new one procured is dual channel.

The server panel says I can put the dual channel RAM in the first 2 slots and then the single channel memory in the remaining slots. However, when I put the dual challen RAM in the first 2 slots, the server just beeps and does not start.

Any pointers on how to troubleshoot this or figure out if the RAM is good at least?

I've just had a similar issue, you should be able to put dual ranked DIMMs in either 1A/B or 2A/B, note however that if the dual ranked DIMMs are put into 2A/B then you will not be able to use slots 3A/B. I've just had similar problem when I was installing 2x 2GB dual ranked DIMMs so have gone from 5GB to 7GB after adding 4GB :o(

Thanks for the info. I tried putting in only the dual ranked DIMMs in 1A/B (2 x 1GB), the server still won't boot. I also tried putting the dual ranked DIMMs in 1A/B and the rest single ranked DIMMs (4 x 512MB) in slots 2A/B and 3A/B and it still won't work.

Do I need to update the BIOS of the server?

Try putting just the dual rank memory in dimm1_A and dimm1_B. Take the rest of the memory out and see if it past post.
