PE6600 (PowerEdge 6600) CPU upgrade problems

We are trying to upgrade our PE6600 from 1.5/400/1M CPUs to 2.5/400/1M CPUs. Both run at the same core voltage. We have updated to BIOS A12 and ESM A20 and A25. As soon as we fit the 2.5 CPUs we get E07F0 (CPU IERR) on the LCD and the Server will not boot. We have searched the Dell Forum and Website but cannot get an answer. Please can someone advise us.

Hi,

The processors you have were in the first generation of PE6600. The second generation introduced 2GHz, 2M Xeon processors (maximum speed). The motherboard only needed a new BIOS version. The third generation introduced the 2.5 and 2.8 processors ; the motherboard is different. So, your old motherboard will not accept this new processor.

Thank-you. An answer, not the one we had hoped for, but at least an answer.

After an hour long (56 minutes to be exact) call with Tech support they were unable to give me any information. In fact they told me they did not even have a part number for the 2.5 CPU. They actually told me that I had the latest revision Motherboard, memory riser and CPU board.

We have 2 customers experiencing exactly the same issue. And here is the solution told me by Dell UK.

In order for PE6600 to work properly with 2 GHz and higher speed Xeon CPU(s), mainboard and memory riser cards should be replaced with new released parts. The parts given below have been available since 16th of October, 2003.

DPN #s for mainboard and memory riser cards respectively:
M1860, K3326.
