The answer lies in your own question. You installed PC100 and it worked fine. Because that's the only compatible memory for 2300. PC133 will not work on this board. Only 100 MHz DIMM will work.

I have ordered new ram from a company that uses low density chips and guarantees they will work in this PE 2300. 

 

However, PC133 shouldn't ever have a problem working in a PC100 machine, should it?  The 133 just indicates that is it is tested for being capable of running up to 133mhz.  I have used PC133 trips in motherboards which only need PC100 for years with no problems.

I agree. But if you know anything about RAM, you should know they are tricky. Specs may match but it would still not work in one motherboard though it works fine on another (different chipset/manufacturer).

Since you bought 4 DIMMs, I would suggest trying two at a time (i.e filling only SOCKET A and B) to test out. I believe you may have already tried it but just a thought.
