PowerEdge 2300 Updating RAID Controller and installing Windows 2000 Adv Server
Good morning
I have a Poweredge 2300 (Service Tag 9V8XH) and I want to do a clean install of Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Although I have done a lot of work with building PC's, this is my first attempt with a server, so please be patient with my inquiries.
Using the SCSI utility, I have formatted the hard drives.
I have BIOS version1.10 A15
Now my questions
In running the Expandable RAID controller update (PERCU84), it tells me that "no expandable RAID controller installed". Am I missing something?
In running the ESM firmware update (A41cust), it tells me that the current firmware version is 5.39, and the image version is 5.22. I did not run the update. Is that correct? Where did the version 5.39 come from?
When installing the Windows 2000 Advanced Server software, I press F6 and load the PERC/SCSI drivers using W2K 2806085, but then later during the installation, I get an error message when the OS is trying to load, that it cannot read some of the set up files ( .sif).
I have read in other forum entries that this is a problem with the RAM. So I replaced the RAM with new chips of the same type that were in the machine (PC100 ECC unbuffered ...the type of RAM chips that Dell recommends for this machine), but I still get this error message and setup cannot continue.
Are there other drivers/software that I need to load at the F6 prompt besides the one I listed above?
Are there other updates that I need to run prior to installing this OS?
What's up with this weird error that it cannot read some of the setup files?
Anyone who can help with this.......I sure would be appreciative.
Thanks in advance, jfcdo

ESM and BIOS UPDATES MUST BE RUN FROM MSDOS. NOT A DOS WINDOW.
You MUST MAKE AN MSDOS BOOT FLOPPY WITH NO CONFIG.SYS AND NO AUTOEXEC.BAT
The F6 install Driver for the PERC II with U84 Firmware is not the file you are using.
its this file
ftp://ftp.dell.com/scsi-raid/W2k268A.exe
(AMI) PERC II, 2/SC, 2/DC, Driver, Win2000, v. 2.68, A03
Filename: W2k268A.exe (47 KB)
ftp://ftp.dell.com/scsi-raid/W2k268A.exe
The PERC with U84 is a AMI Megaraid Enterprise 1200 (428)

Perc II - Firmware, v. U84/C81, A02
File Name: PERCU84.exe
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R15115
FYI, there is a 12Gb boot array limit on the Perc II. Non-boot arrays can be larger.
The drivers are not compatible between the Perc II and the Perc 3/dc. This combination of cards has not been tested. The best chance of compatibility would be to ensure the cards are at the latest firmware.
Note: If you are still running U75 firmware, they must be installed in order:
Perc II U77 Firmware
Filename: PERC_U77.EXE (1.75 MB)

Perc II - Firmware, v. U84/C81, A02
File Name: PERCU84.exe

LSI Logic PERC3/DCL, 3/DC, 3/QC, 3/SC, Firmware, v.1.80, A20
FileName: FW180_PERC3.exe [957 KB]
Release Date: 4/21/2003
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Format.aspx?ReleaseID=R59709
Perc II - Device Drivers, Windows NT 4.0, v. 2.32, A02
File Name: NTDr232.exe

FYI, these are the latest System Upgrades for the PowerEdge 2300:
System BIOS, Dell PowerEdge 2300, A15
FileName: PE2300-BIOSA15.exe [513 KB]
Release Date: 4/24/2003

Dell ESM Firmware, English, Multi System, A41
Filename: a41cust.exe

Note: Extract the files to a DOS bootable floppy disk. Boot the server to this floppy disk, and run smflsh.exe
