PowerEdge 2500 Server -- Unexpected Reboot Issue

Hi Folks,

My PE 2500 server is unexpectedly rebooting itself several times a day. The event log simply gives the mysterious 6008 error ID code. I've perused these boards and have noticed that this is not a particularly uncommon issue. I was wondering if anyone has found a definitive (or working!) solution to this issue. Does it stem from a particular piece of hardware for instance?

Dell, of course, recommended that I run diagnostics. I did this and did not receive any errors. Their next suggestion was to reseat hardware. I went as far as to reseat the memory which didn't fix the issue. Finally they suggest that I reinstall Windows. I haven't done this and somehow don't think this will fix the issue.

One thing that is an outstanding issue on my server is a lack of space on my C:/ partition. I'm dangerously low and will fix this issue as soon as I receive a hard drive that is on order. Could this problem possibly stem from this? This is my current suspicion, but obviously haven't had a chance to rule it out just yet.

Unfortunately this server is the backbone of my network, and I know my users are getting frustrated by this problem...that said, any comments or thoughts would be most welcome!

Same problem here.  My VERY RELIABLE pe 2500sc started randomly rebooting about 3 weeks ago.  It probably averages 10-15 times a day.  No events, other than "unexpected shutdown...".

Dell Tech support had me update pretty much everything, but that did not solve the issue.

Running Win 2000 Server with about 25 users.
Redundant PS and Perc 5i with Raid 5 scsi drives.
Adaptec scsi for tape drive.

No issues with the power or UPS.

I replaced the server and new one works great.  Old one was wiped and restored from scratch.  I left it on overnight and found that it had rebooted twice during the night.  No users, no nothing.

Gotta be a hardware issue I figure, but diagnostics produce nothing.

I know this server is old, but I hate to junk it with all the high $$ stuff inside. Hoping someone figures it out and can tell me what part to replace for another 3 years of solid operation.

This is the consultant's nightmare....

"One thing that is an outstanding issue on my server is a lack of space on my C:/ partition"
I rarely have servers which get to this point but in my experience they either freeze up or start corrupting files. Server roll overs are generally hardware related, mostly power related or  less likely memory/cpu  failure related. As a note, if you have Active Directory, running out of space is a real nasty issue. I highly doubt an over the top repair install will do it, but in desperation I would give it a try, once you free up disk space.

Have you checked for bulging/leaking capacitors on the motherboard? capacitors can bulge at the sides or the tops. With a situation like this, if not under warranty, I open the power supplies up and check components, but as a warning the voltages can be higher than 120v on certain components.

Generally I attach a VOM with a min/max option to the output leads (molex) to check the different power outputs, split second voltage sages can cause a motherboard to cause a "roll over". Diags will not record those which cause the machine to reset.

Have you disconnected CDROMs, floppy,  removed non essential peripherals boards?

Checked for any super hot chips on the motherboard?  Any discolored areas around mobo components.

Reseat EVERY connectors and peripheral boards.

I assume this is on a UPS, are you getting an log messages on the BBU for sages or surges, even if they do not trip the unit to go on battery? Seen this situation with TBUs with old batteries and marginal power supplies.

Do you have any ram modules which you can swap into the server ?
