Poweredge 2800 shutting down randomly
I have a poweredge 2800 that has just started randomly shutting down. It has been doing it for a couple of weeks. I have redundant power supplys pluged into two separate battery backups on two different circuts. When it first started I thought the battery was going bad or over loaded so I got another one and it is still happening. When I came in this am the machine was off the power supplies both had green lights but there was an orange light on the back that was flashing (near an "I" button). When I pushed it it went blue. I'm running sbs 2003 Is there a log or somewhere I can start looking to trouble shoot the problem? I have opened the dell software and everything looks normal after a restart(all I had to do was push the power button). I just reseated the memory, the fans, and the riser board........what next? Thanks Joe

Joe,
Do you have Open Manage installed on the server, not sure if that is the Dell software you were referring to?
If you do what is listed under Hardware log?
Is there an error being displayed on the LCD?
Lastly, are you getting a Blue Screen of Death?

Thank you.
I would like to run a Dset report on the server.
Here is the link to the tool -
www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails
Download:
1. Click the "Download Now" link to download the file.
2. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click the "I agree" link to accept the agreement.
3. When the File Download window appears, click "Save" to save the file to your hard drive.
Installation:
1. Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and double click the file. This would launch the DSET installer program.
2. Follow the instructions in the DSET installer program.
Custom Instructions for DSET 2.2 Reportable Items for Windows_A01.pdf:
I am going to send you an email. Would you please forward me the dset report after you run it.

Joe,
I reviewed the dset and the only hardware issue I see is that the #2 power supply lost ac for a few minutes.
Now another issue I see is that the server is extremely out of date across the board. The raid controller is far enough back that it is listing the array as degraded.
I would suggest updating the server and then swap the power supply cables at the power supply. You don't need to swap where they're going to, but swap the connections at the power supply so that if that issue happens again then we will get it on power supply 1 and can isolate it.
You can use this ISO to update the server, its called Server Update Utility

I have applied the updates.....I was sitting at the machine when it shutdown before I applied the updates (not when I was updating) and it actually went thru an actual "shutdown" not that it just lost power (like I was thinking) Is there a way to look at a windows log and see what triggered the orderly shutdown?
also, I have another PE2800 that is running SBS 2011 is there a Server Update Utility for SBS 2011?

I think I discovered the problem.....and I hate to say it was my own fault....
I am in the middle of migrating from one SBS server to another and I had to demote this server from being the domain controller. Well the application that MS had me use did not really work and it caused the server to think that it was in violation of the EULA and forced a shut down. I really thought I had restarts before the demotion, however, it looks like I was wrong......
I have made a change and I hope that fixes the issue.
Thanks for everyone's help.....

"for a couple of weeks. I have redundant power supplys pluged into two separate battery backups on two different circuts"
If it shuts down primarily at night, I would lean heavily toward a power anomally, power anomalies occur less often during business hours. Have you replaced the batteries in both UPS units? If not, the unit with the "unreplaced" batteries may be reacting to a power issue which does not show up with the unit's self test or a simple "pull the plug" test . If it still reboots randomly at this point, I would reverse the power cords as to the UPS units they go to.
The Windows systen event log should show the the process/user which instigated an orderly shutdown but it will not show any data concerning random shutdowns due to hardware or power failures. Unless a blue screen was involved in a hardware or software issue or the Windows logs noted something, there will be not logs within Windows at all.

If running SBS, it MUST be a Domain Controller - this is written into the licensing for SBS. You must promote it to DC again and leave it ... you can still access it using Domain credentials from Workgroup computers, they just will not be subject to the Domain policies the DC manages.

Joe:
I saw your issue and I think Im surrounding something similar. I have a poweredge SC1420 was working in my office since 2007 as domain controller with any complain. I closed my office last week and I decided to moved equipments to my house and eliminate the domain. Now all computers and servers are under a workgroup. I followed the guides to demote server, but Im very novice on this matter. Now, server is shutting down suddently without any reason since I moved it to my house. I think my issue is relative to the previous domain as yours...can u explain me how to solve this issue??
