PowerEdge 2970 and 2950 III Advanced ECC Memory Verification

I support a couple of PowerEdge 2970s and 2950 IIIs.  The tech specs for both systems show they both support Advanced ECC.  How can I verify this is working and setup correctly?

The OpenManage Server Administrator reports that the ECC Type is "Multibit ECC".  Is that the same as "Advanced ECC" according to Dell?  My understanding is that Advanced ECC can normally survive a module failure if you are using x4 type DIMMs.

Is there anyway to simulate the failure of one module safely?

Background:

I've had some memory modules fail in the 2970s which usually brings down the entire server.  Dell Support had me run a BIOS update, which should help fix the problem of the server crashing when a module goes bad.

There's a section in the online manual

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

about memory sparing on the 2970 that may shed some light on how to use the capability.
