PowerEdge 840 does not POST
One of my clients has a Dell PowerEdge 840 that worked yesterday but does not today. When it is plugged in, the fan starts up on high and it starts to boot even without pressing the power button. It has the normal blue light on the front but also has the no memory modules detected diagnostic code on the front. I have adjusted the memory, rearranged the DIMMS, and taken some of them out but still nothing. Also, I have taken all the components off of the motherboard except for the processor, but it still does the same thing. Further, I set the jumper to clear the NVRAM but still nothing. Any more ideas?

Chris,
The server still does the same thing with different memory. It sounds like my client will just replace the server to something newer. Thanks for all your troubleshooting tips.

ServersRCool,
What you will need to do is take the server to its Minimum To POST configuration. That is removing everything BUT the following;
Power up with that configuration and let me know if the server POSTS. If not then try swapping the power supplies with each other and in each slot.
Also, what are the 4 diagnostic indicators showing, the 4 lights showing ABCD or 1234 on the server?
Let me know what you see.

Chris,
I took everything off except the system board, processor, one DIMM, the power supply, and the control panel. I also swapped the power supply with a different one. It still just turns the fans on high when plugged in and does not post with no video output. The front panel diagnostic indicators show A green and B, C, & D orange. Also, the power button on the front does not turn the server off no matter how long I hold it.

That is indicating No Memory Detected. Which will happen if there isn't a dimm in slot #1, which is the slot closest to the processor. If the dimm is installed there then test each individual dimm in that slot alone to see if it POSTs. If after testing the memory it still isn't working then the issue may be the memory slot on the motherboard itself. Let me know the results of the test.

Chris,
I have tried swapping different memory into slot 1 but the issue continues. I probably need to look at replacing the motherboard. Do you have any more troubleshooting steps?

Is the server still presenting the same thing as before? You could also try a known good dimm from elsewhere to see if it works. Just to see if there may have been something catastrophic happen to existing dimms. If that fails then I would look at replacing the motherboard. If that's the case then Private Message me the SVC tag and we can look at our options.
