PowerEdge HDD speed

Dear All,

We currently have a PowerEdge T320 running two virtual servers on a Host. Since its implementation it has seemed always run slow with operations involving significant HDD use. I was wondering if there are any know issues with these systems.

Server: PowerEdge T320

Memory: 32gb

Raid : H710P

Raid Config: RAID 5 with 3x 15000 rpm 500gb drives

OS: Windows server 2012 (not R2) on all machines

Host: Just runs Hyper V

Virtual 1: AD, dns, dhcp, all other server operations

Virtual 2: Just SQL server

WinTechAdmin,

With the different Raid levels you will see different IOPS (Input/Output Per Second) write performance. The Raid 10 will have the highest IOPS of the three, followed by the Raid 6, where as Raid 5 has the lowest IOPS of them all. The issue you are likely having is due to the combination of the Raid 5, as well as possible the write policy (write back, write through) What is it currently set to? Lastly I would look to see if the servers BIOS, Drac, Raid Controller, or drives are out of date, if so updating them can also increase performance.

Let me know.

Ive arranged for a another 15k drive to be ordered and i will convert the system to Raid 10 one weekend. Hopefully this will have a nice improvement to the IOPS. The latest drivers is a simple idea that I dont know why i didnt think about it. I'll arrange for this to be done. Im unsure about where to set the write policy. I assume in the raid controller. I have read  that writeback, write through can be dangerous for data loss in the event of power loss (server is ups protected). Thoughts?
