Poweredge R710 Memory Upgrade Configuration

Hi,

I've got a Poweredge R710 that currently has 32GB RAM installed via 8 x 4GB modules. I've just ordered a 32GB upgrade (2 x 16GB) from Crucial to bring the server up to 64GB in total, however no matter what configuration i put the modules in, the server just reports an invalid or non optimal configuration.

Can someone help me work out the correct configuation please?

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi thanks, it's hard to predict whether a configuration other than the one suggested will work. It's worth trying (if no additional costs), but in most cases, it's better to assume it won't work. However, if there are those who have the opportunity to try, their experience can help in such situations. I mean, I think it's best to go with tried configurations.

The Dell poweredge r710 it's only able to accept 32 GB total of non-ecc ram or 384gb of ecc ram

Hello Sunnyghat,

When using two different capacity DIMMs you want to put the larger DIMMs first in the channels and follow up with the smaller ones. Example if you have a 16G and an 8G DIMM for CPU1, put the 16G DIMM in A1 and the 8G in A4.

Follow the memory guidelines from the owners manual: Page 129-134

https://dell.to/3rs2o9j

A few call outs:

RDIMMs and UDIMMs cannot be mixed.

No more than two UDIMMs can be populated per channel.

In a dual-processor configuration, the memory configuration for each processor must be identical.

Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed within a memory channel (for example, 2-GB, 8-GB, and 4-GB), but all populated channels must have identical configurations.

I think this should work for you provided all memory rules are followed

Put 16G DIMMs in : A1, A4, A2, A5, A3, A6, B1, B4, B2, B5, B3, B6

Put the 8G DIMMS in : A7, A8, A9, B7, B8, B9

Hi Charles,

Thank you fur the information, I tried the configuration that you suggested but could not get the server to boot, even the status display on the front would not come on.

I have ended up removing the 8GB modules from the server and have it running with the 12x16GB modules giving me 192Gb of memory.

I'll install the 8Gb modules into my other R710 server instead
