PowerEdge R720 unable to update iDRAC

I purchased a dell PowerEdge R720 secondhand recently, and noticed that its bios and iDRAC firmware were 5+ years out of date. Upon trying to update the iDRAC however, I ran into an issue attempting to upload firmware past version 2.10.10.10, as it would give me an error of "upload failed" whenever I tried to run it from the remote update function through the iDRAC web portal. Upon rolling back and attempting to just upload any firmware past v2.10.10.10, the update completed successfully, and the server booted as normal, however the iDRAC web portal was unusable, as I was able to sign in, however nothing would load. I then reset the firmware back to 1.66.65, and everything was working normally.

In addition to this issue however, I also ran into an issue whenever attempting to upload firmware locally through the lifecycle controller, as it would state that there was an issue verifying the credibility(paraphrasing here as I am writing this later than I was working with the server)

What solutions are there to problem #1? Much thanks for your help!

Hello M2ABRAMSTANK,

Thank you for the update. I want to confirm you did leave it set for 3 minutes before reconnecting and powering up again after the flea power drain? There should be a wait time for the DRAC to reset without any power.

What is the BIOS version you are on?

Try Clear NVRAM - there is a map under the lid to show the jumper location. Shut down,  Set jumper to the Clear position, power on and Post up to the jumper error, shut down and return to original location. Boot normal and check results.

To further this, I am trying to utilize the Dell OpenManage tool to see if attempting to update through there will be successful.

Yes, I pressed that button and went back to start updating from the firmware I started from. My issue wasnt that I was unable to find the firmware, my issue was that I was unable to update my firmware forwards, as I constantly ran into issues updating past version 2.10.10.10. Any version past that I coudnt upload. Are there any other solutions?

Hello M2ABRAMSTANK,

I would recommend to make sure you can update the DRAC locally before adding another tool but you can try and check results.

You note you're on 1.66.65, and everything was working normally.

Since it is so far behind I recommend stepping up the update.

Start with 2.10.10.10 : https://dell.to/3bCLInC

Each DRAC firmware version will have an listing similar to this

File Format: An application

File Name: iDRAC8_2.10.10.10_A00.exe

Download the file and execute to extract files.

In the DRAC on the update page supply the firmimg.d7 file.

At the bottom of each firmware version page will be a link you can choose to get the next version:

> Other Available Versions

I recommend using one from each year. These should work:

2.10.10.10

2.21.21.21

2.40.40.40

2.50.50.50

2.60.60.60

2.63.60.62

2.65.65.65

Yes this is what I tried, I updated to 1.65.65 from the prior version, however as mentioned before as soon as I went past 2.10.10, it became impossible to update the iDRAC

Hi, what Charles said should have worked. I haven't seen any occasion that this didn't work. Can you take a picture for us where you are stuck at or so?

Heya! My apologies for the extremely long delay in between messages, I have been on vacation. I will be able to send some screenshots on sunday, when I get back!

OK so I encountered something new, I am now able to update from 1.65.65 forwards, to as far as I tested, at least 2.20.20, however I am unable to update forwards, as whenever I upload firming.d7, it gives me an error, stating that the "upload failed", at least until I downgrade back to 1.65.65, and upload the next version. IMG MAIN.png

What possible causes/solutions are there?, Much thanks!

Hi have you tried a new SD card or format existing one to FAT 32. (Please expect data loss.)

Heya, would you mind explaining further what you mean by a new SD card?

Hello M2ABRAMSTANK,

Can you check in the iDRAC System Event Log (SEL) for any errors related to the firmware Upload Failed?

A couple recommendation:

  1. Try a flea power drain and try update again
    1. drain flea power (shut down, disconnect power cables and Network cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed).  After flea power drain, system has to set for 3 minutes for DRAC to reset without any power plugged in, then plug in NIC and power but wait 2 minutes before power on to give DRAC time to initialize.
  2. Try reboot the DRAC and try again. To reboot the DRAC
    1. On the main page of the iDRAC in the right hand column 'Quick launch tasks' select Reset iDRAC (this is a reboot of the DRAC)
  3. You may also try reset iDRAC to defaults, reconfigure settings and try update again.
    1. Boot to F2 > iDRAC Settings > Reset iDRAC configurations to defaults

Reconfigure:

Boot to F2 > iDRAC Settings > Network.

Configure IP, Subnet and Gateway.

Note connection being used i.e. LOM1, Dedicated…..Dedicated preferred. Be sure to connect cable to dedicated port on back, the one with wrench icon.

Default credentials are user: root, password: calvin.

Heya, for note, there was no mention of a failed update in the SEL, or the web ui event log. The SEL didnt mention much other than both powersupplies work, and the web ui event log mentioned that updates succeeded, but not failed.

Continuing, after attempting all 3 solutions, I have found that none of them work, something of note though is after rebooting the iDRAC after the flea power drain didnt work, I no longer got an upload failed error, simply the upload wont ever complete, for example, I left it for over 20 minutes and it still hadnt uploaded.

Heya! As far as I know, I held the power button for about 30 seconds, then went to go do something for >5 minutes, then returned and plugged it in, then left for another 5 minutes, and finally turned it on. Tomorrow, before I try clearing the NVRAM, I will try another one w/ the new issue.

I am on 2.5.4 for the bios. After clearing the NVRAM, and booting the server, it appears that it has indeed solved my problem. I appreciate all the help you all were!!
