Problem starting Nvidia Grid K2 on PowerEdge R720

  • Hello, I have problem installing K2 on R720. I tried it on  boards riser 2 and 3 on 2 different servers R720. It worked on Riser 2 on the one of them and Riser 3 of the other... But after 1-2 restarts it stops booting. After starting post procedure, it shows error PCIe Training error slot 6 or 4. And then the system can't boot, I have to shut it down and remove the K2 after that it boots normally. Can you tell me where is the problem. I also tried when the riser 3 slot on of the servers accepted the card and it booted normally to swap it to non working riser 3 of the other.. but it didn't work there. So the riser card maybe not the problem. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

As far as I know, Nvidia K2 should be among the cards that work on this server. I will try to speculate what might happen. If there is a 3rd party part that may cause compatibility problems on the server at first, can you remove it and try again. You can do power drain because you have inserted and removed the card several times and there is a possibility of static electricity on the card.
1. Power the server down.
2. Disconnect server from all power cables, Network cables.
3. Hold down the power button continuously for at least 10 seconds.
4. Insert power cables and network cables back to the system.
5. Wait about 2 minutes before powering on server to give the iDRAC time to initialize.
6. Power the system on.

Can you check by disabling the "Embedded video controller" under "Integrated Devices" as a setting in the BIOS. However, when you disable this, the virtual console on the iDRAC is turned off. But before you update your iDRAC and BIOS to the latest version please. One point is the additional power the card would require (max 225 W). When connecting the card to the riser, you are connecting it with an additional power cable, otherwise it may be that the total PSU power of the server is not fully sufficient. I wonder How much watts of PSU on the server? Can you check the K2 card part code? I see the ppid "KVJ6K" compatible with R720. If your OEM is, therefore, there may be a problem.

Let us know if this helps!

Hello, thanks for your reply. So the card is Nvidia Grid K2 P2055. 225 W. The servers have 2 PSUs 750W. Can it be that the PSU are too weak? I will try the drain procedure and see if it will work. Thanks again!

Frankly, as far as I can see the power seems insufficient. However, this is the information I can find officially. Other than that, there are those who have mentioned that there are those who operate different graphics cards with less power, for example https://dell.to/37po5ds It may work in this sense. I can share officially Dell approved information as follows; with reference to page 72 https://dell.to/37wJ5zj

I would like to add the following quotation from our community with the necessary information on the subject here. "https://dell.to/3gTdo6e"

The GPU enablement kit is required for internal GPU installation. It contains the power cables and other items to enable GPU support in the R720 chassis.

GPU enablement kit includes:

- low-profile heat sinks
- low-profile Memory shroud
- Power Cables for GPUs
- Plugs from card to PCI-e riser 2/3
- One cable supports two card connectors
- Provides support for cards that require more than 75W power
- Different closeout EMI shields for unoccupied PCI-e slots

GPU Card Restrictions
- Requires 2 CPUs
- CPU must be 95W or less
- Max of two double wide GPGPU (rule that they take up 2 slots)
- Max of four single wide GPGPU
- All GPUs must be same type / model
- GPU requires redundant 1100W PSU and GPU enablement kit
- Two double-wide GPU requires optional riser 3
- Four single wide GPU cannot have optional riser 3
- TBU not supported

You didn't write what system you use. 2012 2016 2019 or 2022 WS
