Thank you for the rapid reply, Todd.

No we don't use a RAID controller. However, using the live disk which, as you noted, boots fine from the optical drive, we can access and read and write to the hard disks. In fact the only problem (albeit a fundamental one) is that the system on the hard disks will not boot. In fact there is no apparent evidence that the MBR is even being read. The boot loader goes to the remote access dialog. (And yes, we checked the BIOS setup, and the hard disks are before remote access in boot priority).

Also note that the hard disks passed the extended diagnostic tests.

I suspect we are off-warranty now for parts. My main concern is to try to get this system up and running again ASAP, because there are some contractual implications.
