R310 Ram Configuration

Hello, I am new to this forum and I need your help.

My question is can you put 3 or 4 16gb modules to equal 48GB configuration on the poweredge r310

Does 48GB ram configuration even work on the R310? If so how should i go about it

Simaan5,

The R310 does support 48gb of memory, but not with 16gb Dimms. It would require you to use 6 8GB dimms. I am not seeing anywhere that the 16GB dimm is supported, even with the recent BIOS update. You can try testing with a 16GB in slot A1, then boot up. Now in regards to the number of dimms installed, you would need to go with the 4 dimms, as 3 wouldn't be supported due to the memory channels needing to match.

Let me know if this helps.

I tried the 6 8GB modules to equal the 48GB configuration but it does not work. No video is being displayed unless I put 4 8gb modules.

What should I do?

I am getting mixed answers

Are they quad rank sticks? As in 4rx8 on the label?  These memory controllers have a limit of 8 ranks per channel and there are 3 slots per channel on the 310 so you can only populate 4 of the 6 slots with quad rank ram.  If they are quad rank you will need to get some 2rx8 sticks which exist, I just don't know the dell part number off the top of my head.

One last fyi is if you do in fact have quad rank sticks and want to move to some dual rank sticks you will need to make sure they are x8 and not x4 or x16 as x4 and x16 sticks won't work with the memory controller on those processors either.
