R420 Memory Upgrade COnfiguration

Question

We have an R420 8C3S6X1, with 16GB Ram (4 x 4GB)

We need to add an additional 8GB or 16GB. What would be the options to make sure the memory is ranked correctly?

For 8GB is adding another 2 x 4GB sufficient?

For 16GB would we need 4 x 4GB or could we do 2 x 8GB?

Hi GraniteLP,

Is this a single or dual processor system? The memory channels have to match, and there are 3 memory channels. Right now you are using 2 channels. So you could add 2 more 4GB dimms and use 3 channels. Adding 8GB dimms would require changing the configuration more.

Thanks. In that case adding the two 4GB dimms is the easiest upgrade. It will use all 6 DIMM slots. If you wanted to use 8GB dimms you would have to add three 8GB sticks and remove one of the 4GB sticks so that each channel has an 8GB and 4GB stick.
