R710 fastest memory configuration?

I'm just going to put an extra 16gb RDIMMs (2*8Gb) in to our R710, currently it has 16GB (2*8Gb) RDIMM's, its a dual processor server.  Which slots should I use to give the best performance?  I was going to populate in the following order

A1

A2

B1

B2

but does this give the best performance or should I use

A1

A4

B1

B4

Advanced ECC protects against many types of memory failure.  You were originally looking for the "fastest memory configuration" ... that is Optimizer in the configuration I listed.

With 4 DIMM's A1,A2/B1,B2 will give you the best performance.  The memory slots are divided into three channels which the processor can use together to increase performance, so the more memory channels you populate, the better performance you will get.

x x - | - - - | - - -

Valid configuration.  Not only would this slow your memory speed to 1066MHz, it would only utilize one channel.

x - - | x - - | - - -

Valid configuration.  This will allow the memory to run at the full 1333MHz, and it will utilize two memory channels for improved performance.

If you upgrade another 16GB, then you would populate like this:

x - - | x - - | x - -

Which would then utilize all three memory channels at 1333MHz.

It would be faster having them in A1, A2, B1, and B2 as it spreads them across all the channels. That would give you the best performance out of the two configurations.

Ok I'll go with the first configuration, but I found this in the R710 manual.

7.9 Advanced ECC (Lockstep) Mode

In Advanced ECC (Lockstep) mode, the two channels closest to the processor are combined to form one 128-bit channel. This mode supports Single Device Data Correction (SDDC) for both x4- and x8-based memory modules. Memory modules must be identical in size, speed and technology in corresponding slots.

What are the advantages of this configuration?  I take it you would populate

A2

A3

B2

B3

I see this is old. hopefully someone can assist.

I am upgrading from 4 - 8GB's to 12- 16gb sticks, 1333mhz. I used A1, A2, A3, A4, A5,A6 and B1, B2,B3, B4, B5,B6 - however, I am getting a message on boot about unused memory. What is the fastest config for my ram? I was told using A7-9 and b7-9 would lower the speed, so not to populate those slots. What am I doing wrong?
