"My firmware is a bit outdated, wonder if I should bother updating it"
You should bother updating it on a regular basis ;) Keeping firmware and drivers up to date is part of proper server maintenance.
The controller is what manages the state of the battery, and out of date firmware is a big reason why batteries have issues.
Update your iDRAC/LCC, BIOS, PERC driver (if available), then the firmware (all will require a reboot) … then give it 48 hours before calling the battery bad. If it still fails with a known good battery, then it is the controller that needs to be replaced.
I tried updating the firmware but it keeps saying update is not compatible with this system after looking for the service tag and downloading both the 32 and 64 bit of the drivers, both for Windows 2012 and VMWARE ESXI 5.5 for the R710/H700 Integrated raid controller.
Am I missing something when attempting to do this?

Thanks. I will followup when I can schedule a reboot of the server.
