R720 Power Supply firmware update

Hello

Have problems updating the firmware for the (AC) PSU for the R720, tried doing it from the lifecycle controller and by downloading and running the windows package from Win2008 R2.

After installing in both cases, the server powered down, but didn't wake up as advertisied (I waited overnight). Out of options I pressed the power button, and the firmware didn't upgrade.

I also tried plug in only 1 PSU, with the same result

Any help is appreciated, thanks for reading

Details about my config:

Old firmware version of PSU: 07.25.7D

Target firmware viersion: 07.25.7E

Website to download the Windows version of firmware update:

Hi thanks for messages

The problem has disappered by itself, as I tested just now the firmware has upgraded successful (using windows version)

In the past it shut down after step #7. The Lifecycle controller showed that it was upgrading the firmware, like this:

Afterwards, it shut down, and never woke up by itself. But this time it woke up and upgrade successfully

I try to remember what changes I made after last time it failed, in the hope that someone will find it useful:

1. making / deleting network trunk (teaming)

2. Changed workgroup name, join a domain

3. When running the update, I used the domain administrator account instead of local administrator account

4. Installed Kaspersky KSC

All 4 is seemingly unrelated to the firmware update, I have also installed & removed openmanage essentials, but can't remember if it's before or after the last failure

but since it's updated now, I am happy

Thanks for helping

How long did you wait for the system to wake back up? According to the installation instructions it could take anywhere between 3-20 minutes...

IMPORTANT:
After a successful power supply firmware download, the managed system will turn off for a duration ranging from three to twenty minutes to continue updating the firmware. It is imperative not to disturb/restart manually the system, wait until the PSU FW update finishes. (Update time may vary depending on number of PSU for update, it may vary approximately from 10 mins to 20 mins.Margin should be added to ensure the Dell Update Package (DUP) is not interrupted. Once the firmware update is complete, the managed system will reboot automatically.

I am having the exact same problem where R720xd powers off during PSU update.

Hi Emerald Sentinel

Let's talk about the update using the windows update package.
At which stage did the server shutdown?

Installation
1. Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and double-click the new file.
2. Read the release information presented in the dialog window.
3. Download and install any prerequisites identified in the dialog window before proceeding.
4. Click the Install button.
5. Follow the remaining prompts to perform the update.
6. Upon successful completion the DUP will prompt to reboot system.
7. Restart your system.
After the system restarts, DUP will enter USC to complete the flashing of the PSU firmware.
8. The actual flash begins after DUP exits USC. Please do not power off or power cycle the system as this can result in a non-functional power supply.
9. Once the flashing process is complete the system should power back up and boot to OS.

Let us know please.

I am having this problem on R720's as well.

Using the LCC to perform the update.  R720 shuts down, but does not power on again.

Does anyone know what the issue is?

Thx.

Justin

I am having exact the same problem on 3 different R520. After a reboot the Lifecycle controller showed that it was upgrading the firmware. The system shut down after around 30 seconds, and never woke up by itself.

Dual PSU
Old firmware version: 07.25.7D
Target firmware viersion: 07.25.7E

The LCC log has 2 entries:
SUP0535   Updating Delta 495W PSU
SUP0538   Unable to update Delta 495W PSU

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm having the same problem.  I let my R620 sit overnight and it was still off in the morning.  I ran the PSU update again and it again shut down and didn't come back up.  I'll give it another 30 minutes just in case but otherwise I guess I'll try doing it via Windows.

UPDATE: OK, let is sit for 45 minutes and it was still off.  I powered it back on and then it came up that it was doing more of an update on the screen but then it powered off again before I realized what it was doing and could grab a screenshot or anything.  I'll give it another 30 minutes and try it again.

Now I have the same problem with a R720. After a reboot the Lifecycle controller showed that it was upgrading the firmware. The system shut down after around 30 seconds, and never woke up by itself (I was waiting more than 1 hour).

Old firmware version: 69.45.99
Target firmware version: 6B.47.9B

Thanks for any suggestions.

Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

My issue is somewhat different than that I have seen posted on this forum. I managed to get the lifecycle controller to get all the firmware updates for the three Poweredge R720 that we have on the network. Everything went fine for the other firmwares with the exception of the power supplies ones. The systems have dual 750W on them. None of them would update at all. However, one of them is on an infinite loop since Friday afternoon trying to update the firmware and rebooting. It does that about every 10 minutes or so. How do I get out of this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You failed to read the release notes (and I'm assuming .99 is a typo)

"After successful PSU FW Update on PSU PN: 6W2PW & D5MW8, PSU FW Version shall be 69.45.9B"

You're trying to update the firmware with the same firmware.

Sorry, you are wrong. As you can see on the SUU Comparison Report there is no typo.

LC update PSU, reboot, wait... auto power on server and FW the same as old.

Is the way to update PSU???

All,

There are issues updating 12G PSU firmware, this is a good link.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Apparently this has been fixed with 13G.

I am also seeing the update :

1. Reboots the server

2. Enters LCC, applies update

3. Powers off server and does not power on even after multiple hours..

The iDRAC LCC log suggests diabling TPM in the BIOS which I am yet to try. I also wondered re the link above whether I can make one PSU the standby PSU, update and then swap, yet to test..
