Hello @TunMin,

Please, let me know what is the current Virtual Disk configuration? How many disks does the VD have? And what is the RAID level? Also, what disks are composing this virtual disk? Can you let me know the model of the disks and the firmware of this disks? And also the model and firmware of the disks you want to add?

Regards.

Hi @DiegoLopez,

We are using vSAN with HBA mode. I want to add disk Model - "DELL" , I did not get firmware information of new drive  due to initializing Firmware Stuck on First POST screen. Thank you.hdd.jpg

Hi as long as it’s okay to sacrifice the data and if you are in the initial stage of configuration I’d go ahead without the disk. Take it out.

Hi what I mean by is that first, boot without the disk then, only with the existing ones, then you can add online.

We have a cluster of Dell Power Edge R730XD Servers with the PERC H730 mini RAID controllers. Currently we are used 800G SSD and 1.2TB SAS drives that configured in pass-through mode as we run vmware vSAN. We did  adding more new SSD 1.9T and SAS 2.4TB purpose capacity expansion there we facing issues that  stuck firmware initializing too many tasks but it's was not resolved.

We have plan soon that replace all of the PERC H730 mini with the HBA330 as suggested by dell.

My question; If  we swap the controller , it does recognize existing drives and be able to read the existing data

or do we need to backup as completely evacuate the data before that controller being changed.

Thank you.

Hello @TunMin,

Yes, you must always have a back up of data. Even more when carrying storage operations. If something does not work as you expect you could lose the data. So, always have a backup.

This being said, the RAID configuration is not stored in the PERC but in a portion of the disks. So you can safely replace the PERC and the RAID configuration (if compatible with the new PERC) will be loaded by the new PERC.
