RAID CONTROLLER DRIVER AND FIRMWARE UPDATE

This might be a stupid question or I am reading into this too much.  When updating raid controller drivers and firmware on an existing system the instructions state to idle your system before doing the update.  does this simply mean close all apps, diconnect the network cable then do the update, or is there something else that I am missing here.
