Replace failed RAID drive on PE2650

I have a very old PE2650 where one of the drives in the RAID array failed. The server runs Windows 2000 and is a server that supports some extremely old legacy software. The primary concern is to keep this server as unchanged as possible - so new service packs, etc. are not an option.

Anyway, I got a replacement drive and popped it in the slot but nothing has happened so far. After a bit of searching I found this thread:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/906/t/19268006.aspx

"As soon as I did Remove Dead Segments, the replacement drive came on line and started regenerating" one user said. Great! So I went to find OpenManage on my server.

OpenManage isn't on the server, so I downloaded the latest and greatest. Despite specifying that I needed the 32 bit version, the installer insists that, "This is not a valid Win32 application". Fine. I found an old download somewhere for OpenManage version 5, which came as an .iso. Downloaded it, burned it to disc, and installed it. Finally the installation worked! I started up the program, and... "Server Administrator has detected that either a default Internet browser was not selected for this system or that the default Internet browser is not supported by he Server Administrator."

ARGH! Ok, fine. I guess I can update the browser on the server without interfering with anything else. So I downloaded IE7.

"Internet Explorer 7 is not supported on this operating system"

FINE! How about Firefox? Apparently Firefox 15 is supported, according to this PDF:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/manuals/Common/dell-chassis-mgmt-cntrllr-v4.3_Reference%20Guide5_en-us.pdf

Surprise, surprise, Firefox 15 is too advanced for this system as well.

This is utterly frustrating. I've never felt like a computer was fighting me so much. All I want is to tell this hard drive to rebuild itself into the RAID array. It shouldn't be this hard. Is there a version of Dell OpenManage that will work with IE6, or one that's not browser dependant at all? Or is there a way to circumvent the check for supported version? I just need OpenManage to run one single, solitary command, just this one time in my life. This server has been running for 10 years without the OpenManage software so I don't really care if our experience with it is less than idea. I just need to accomplish this one thing and, as you can imagine, it's pretty critical.

Agallegos,

This is the version you will need - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-xeo2650?driverId=R183698&osCode=WNT5&fileId=2731119587&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SM

Download that and BEFORE installing go to ADD/REMOVE Programs and delete any prior versions of OMSA listed. Then run the download and reboot after install.

Let me know how it goes.

I am in fact on Service Pack 4. However, version 5.4 is actually higher than the version I tried before - 5.1.

I'll give 4.5 a shot and see what happens.

OMSA 5.4 says it will work on 2000 SP4.  The way you talk makes me think you aren't even at SP4, meaning 5.4 won't work either.  OMSA 4.5 is required for SP3.  What SP level are you at?

No luck. I'm still getting the same error:

I guess it's possible that the error is exactly right and IE isn't defined as the default browser although it certainly seems to be - it's definitely the default for HTML documents and according to settings it should be checking whether its the default every time it's loaded, so as far as I can tell it's set the way it should be. Perhaps there's a different setting somewhere I don't know about? If this were a newer OS I'd check the default programs but I don't even see any such listing in Win2K.

Any other ideas anyone?

You might try making FF the default, then switching back (works in some other scenarios).

You said you tried to install IE7 (which is not supported on pre-XP/2003 OS's) ... which version are you running?  According to the 4.5 docs, IE6 SP1 (and SP2 for 2003) are supported browsers, so if you have IE5 (bundled with 2000) or IE6 (no SP), then they probably wouldn't work.  Here is SP1:

Also, no version of FF on Windows is listed as supported.
