Server environment
Hi,
We have a full rack with 3 severs (for now) that is in a small room in our building. Since the equipment is putting out around 6000 BTUs we installed a window air conditioner to keep the room approximately 65 degrees. I set the intake setting recycle the air in the room so I don't introduce any moisture to the room by letting in air from outside. However, we are in Vermont (leaves are great this year, BTW) and it is getting colder now as we head towards winter.
What should I do with this room? Once it is 30 degrees or below outside it seems strange to run a windows unit for the inside? I don't even know if its possible to run unit in the winter, to be honest. If I open a window, I would let in dust, moisture, etc. Plus it can get really cold here (-20 degrees) and I can imagine getting the room too cold and having stuff fog up when you open the door :O
I thought about just opening the door on this room and allow it to assist in heating the building but others complain of the noise.
Any suggestions?
TIA
Zach

I would keep using your airco in the winter. You equipment still generates heat and you must get rid of that.
If it gets colder outside, you airco will have an easier job cooling your server-room. I wouldn't certainly open the windows, since moisture, leaves etc. can come into the room. The airco will also help to keep a stable temperature.

Maybe even put in a space heater if it really does drop...
In previous winters when it gets close to -20 has there been a noticeable drop in temp inside the building?
My point is that just as too much heat will hurt the server, too much cold will too...
I wouldn't mess with the AC... Just let it do its job...
