Removing the backplane may cause permanent errors. I'd suggest to find a cable solution to connect the 5805 to the backplane, or just get a PERC H700 with NVRAM (instead of a regular battery). The PERC is an LSI controller and has a good track record too.

Note: the 5805 is just a 3Gbit/s controller, so the backplane isn't really a bottleneck.

I could be misunderstanding page 7 of this guide www.dell.com/.../6gb-sas-transition.pdf   but it seems to suggest bandwidth on a 3gbps backplane would not be saturated until upwards of 10 disks were added to a RAID-0 array.  Since I'm going RAID-10 on 8 drives it's essentially akin to 4 drives in RAID-0, in theory I might not take much of a performance hit with the 3gbps backplane. Whether the drives themselves will create an issue pushing through this backplane is another concern, anyone know if these 6gbps drives scale themselves down?

I just opened it up and installed the 5805 --  as for using the original cabling I'm out of luck here (totally different connectors)  and I'll have to speak with Adaptec about finding some cables that might be used to go into this backplane. Thanks again for your advice.

Thanks for the clarification!   I have the 1068e-ir   as shipped, I was hoping to just pull that card out and use the cabling from that going into the 5805 though I have not looked into it yet.  Should I be optimistic?

Hopefully two of these will get me running into the backplane.  NORCO C-SFF8087-D

I'll keep you posted.

To get an idea of what kind of cable you need, check out Wikipedia's pictures of the industry standard connectors. With that info you can shop for the appropriate cables. I haven't really (recently) looked at the T710's backplane to see what kind of connector is being used on that side, but if it's also an 8087, that NORCO cable should work.
