PE 2850 - Windows 2008 R2 - problem with HD Driver

Hi,

I attempt to install windows 2008 R2 on a PE 2850, but it's not working.

The problem is that windows doesn't recognize the hardrive (when I should choose on which partition I want to install the OS).

I tried to load the driver PERC 4e/DI RAID v6.46 (from the dell support website) but it says that the driver is not digitally signed.

The installation is working with Windows 2008, the driver version is 6.50, so I took it and loaded it during the installation of 2008 R2 but it is not working eather (same message).

I also tried with the driver from lsi.com, the driver version is 6.51, it is digitally signed but it's not working for 4e/DI (4/Di, 4e/DC, ... but not 4e/DI).

Do you have any idea how to resolve this ? can dell do something about it ?

Thanks

When I use the file from the link above R227150, I see the 4/DC in the list of drivers to select from. But when I select it, I still get an error that windows can not be installed and the reason is there is no valid RAID drivers. The raid array is created and initialized. I get to the screen where it asks where do you want windows installed. It sees all the drives in the raid and I can delete and re-create the  partitions from that screen. I just can't install windows on any partition because there is no valid Windows 2008 R2 drivers.

I actually got Windows 2008 R2 installed on a PE 2850 with a 4/DC PERC card. I found someone else who got it to work. We used a Win 2K3 version of the 4/DC driver. Here is the link:

After you load the driver from CD, you still might get the error that windows can't install on this device. If you look at the details, you will get an error code of 0X80300001. This means it is looking for the Windows CD/DVD. Take out the driver CD, put in the Windows DVD and hit refresh. You should be good to go.

I to decided to reperpse some older hardware, PE 2850, but received a slightly different issue, i think.

My issue is that i can load either driver suggested on this thread and i see my 2 mirrored drive sets as 2 logical drives.  My problem occurs when Server 2008 R2 goes to install.  The copy goes straight to 100% then it starts to unpackage and just spins it's wheels for a while and errors out.  I thought this might be a DVD drive issue but it did the same thing on two different machines, not that that  lets the drive off the hook.

Anyone have any advice?

When I came across this problem I had tried clearing my raid configuration to see if the install would find the hard drives, it didn't. However, when I came across this solution I did not set up my raid configuration and the DC driver didn't work. However after setting up my raid configuration and using the driver it worked. Therefore dont forget to set up your raid configuration!!

So glad I found this post. I was going around in circles for the past several days and getting pretty frustrated.

Bought a reconfigured  Dell 2850, and was trying to install my copy of 2008 Web Server R2, Anyway, long story short, ran into the same problems which are stated throughout this post.

Tried other suggestions from sites, and none of them work. Then found this, took the advice and downloaded the files, placed the ISO on a disk and viola. Worked perfectly.

Thanks for saving me from a migraine. :emotion-1:

Hi,

I just installed 2008 R2 on a PE 2850, all you need to do is download the lsi drivers for the perc card and install them during the windows setup, when it says it cannot find the drives, go to install from hard drive and and I just used a usb drive and installed the drivers. After that, 2008 R2 installed like normal.

By the way R2 is horrible......

Why is R2 horrible ... because it no longer includes the older PERC drivers?

Keep in mind when installing ... no only do you need the proper driver when not native to the OS install, but you also MUST configure RAID before attempting to install, or even with the proper driver it won't see any drives to install to.

The drivers listed seem to work when attempting to install Windows 7 x64 on a PE 2850.  I say seem because I'm still installing, but things are looking good with me past the missing driver screen.

Yeah, they should work fine ... they're also the only option :)

This files from the downloads link worked for me. I just grabbed the driver and unzipped onto a USB key. Worked great.. I can't see why they could just include the older drivers on the DVD. It's not like they were running out of space. But, oh, well. Old Dell 2850 re-purposed.

Microsoft dropped native support for some SCSI protocols in 2008 R2 (which was supported in 2008), so devices using those protocols need third-party drivers.  It was never a matter of space, but of ongoing native support for those devices.
