Replacement HDD for Dell PowerEdge R400

Good Day

i have a Dell PowerEdge R440 one of the drives it came with failed

Dell does not sell the same drives anymore due to the age of the R440

I have been told that i need to find a drive with similar/Exact specs as the one that went down to rebuild the RAID 1 that came pre-installed before i inherited the server

Current drive specs: Toshiba AL14SXB90ENY, 900GB, 15K RPM, SAS 12 Gbps, 2.5″ SFF

RAID controller: PERC H730P (Embedded)

I have found two options that match the drive's specs listed above

https://www.serversupply.com/HARD%20DRIVES/SAS-12GBPS/900GB-15000RPM/TOSHIBA/AL14SXB90ENY_299232.htm

https://www.serversupply.com/HARD%20DRIVES%20W-TRAY/SAS-12GBPS/900GB-15000RPM/DELL/YKT0W_306930.htm

what i am asking if any of these Drive listings will work with my R440 and allow me to rebuild my RAID 1 as a stop-gap measure while i am migrating the Server over to a Pair of SSD drives, once the Server is working on the SSD drives i shut down the server, take out the HDDs and run the server on the new SSD drives.

Thank you for your time

Aaron Rousch,

The two drives you listed should work fine in the R440, as they are both reflecting the same part. (YKT0W is an internal part number for the same drive).  The only thing that could be of issue is that the first one you linked may not have Dell firmware, so you may need to update it.

Now regarding the scenario you presented, to start I would make certain you have a complete backup of the data, as it is a good measure to do so when doing anything with the RAID. Now from what it sounds like is that you are wanting to migrate over, which normally would be ok, but in your case you can't migrate from a SAS/SATA to an SSD within the same Virtual Disk. So what you would need to do is backup the data, delete the existing Virtual DIsk, then recreate it with the new drives, and then restore the data.

Let me know if this helps.

Good day, Yes. that is the plan. i am aware i can't Migrate from SAS/SATA to an SSD which is why i was confirming the two HDD as to rebuild the current RAID as a Stop Gap so i can request time to re-create the virtual drive Data onto the SSD, order the same SSD and create a new RAID.

Hello Again Chris, just to confirm this HDD

https://www.serversupply.com/HARD%20DRIVES%20W-TRAY/SAS-12GBPS/900GB-15000RPM/DELL/YKT0W_306930.htm

The Dell Model number shouldn't matter just as long as everything else matches correct?

900GB

15K

SAS

12Gbps

should be compatible with my R440 Server, i should just need to plug the HDD in and rebuild the raid from the IDRAC correct?

The drive should work in the server, I was simply stating before that the drive is the same as the one I gave the part number for, so they are the same drives.

Yes you should be able to insert the replacement and it should rebuild automatically. Now if it doesn't start rebuilding automatically then you may need to access the controller and assign the new drive as a hotspare, which will trigger it to rebuild then.
