Inventory lost - source probably empty, Inventory lost, because source possible empty

I have a dell Powervault TL 2000 and it has the following error:

Inventory lost - source probably empty, Inventory lost, because source possible empty
Code: 8A 4C

Does anybody know what this is , and how to fix (or troubleshoot) it? I'm not familiar with this type of backup unit.

Help is appreciated

Hello Bastiaan van Leeuwen,

Yes I would power cycle the TL & the host and see if the error still is showing afterwards.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Bastiaan van Leeuwen,

That error is in reference to a possible slot issue.  What you are going to want to do is to eject the magazines and manually try & insert a tapes into each slot and then use the cut outs on the back to push the tapes out to see if any of the slots are sticking while trying to eject the media.  If all slots are lose and no sticking then what you are going to want to do is to load the magazines back into the unit with about 5 tapes in each magazine so you can do a slot to slot test.  To run the slot to slot test you go Service Library MenuPerform Diagnostics Select Slot to slot test & I would do at least 50 cycles. If you don’t get the error again then all should be good.  If you find any slot that is sticking when manually ejecting the media then it could mean that the slot has warped & in most case you can put a tape in & eject it out manually about 10-15 times should loosen the slot back up. If the slot still will not loosen back up then what is normally done is that the magazine is replaced.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you. I looks like all slots can eject tapes. Some slots are not easy (how much force do you need?) but with a little pressure the tapes come out.

The slot to slot test passed....

What should i do next, i can try to move tapes to every slot and see if that works?

BTW is there any procedure to clear this error (maybe it does not happens anymore and i just should clear the error?)

Hello Bastiaan van Leeuwen,

Since your Slot to Slot test passed then I would say that you should be good.  What I would do is to run your normal backups again & if you get the error again then se can look into seeing which slot that it was trying to grab the media from & see if it is the slot or the media that is giving the error.

The error normally clears once a backup job has been run successfully.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you.

The message is from 14.11.06 18:23:43, and backup has been running fine. It did not cleared. So probably i have a normal working unit with a old error? How should i clear this error (so the led on the unit is gone)?

Hello Bastiaan van Leeuwen,

The error should clear once a tape is able to go into the drive.  Now if you want you can clear the logs by going into the Service Library Menu and selecting view logs.  Once in the logs there is an option to clear logs.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks. I have cleared the logs and everything works fine, but stil the system status gives an error: Inventory lost - source probably empty, Inventory lost, because source possible empty

Code: 8A 4C

Next option a powercycle?

The powercycle cleared the error.

Thank you.

Hello Jasbos,

What that message is referring to is that you need to put the library in an offline state so that no backups can be run while the test is running. If you are running a test on the drive then you will need to put the drive in an offline state so that the test can complete and results recorded. In most cases is you stop your backup software services then run the test.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Jasbos,

What is the current version of firmware that is on your TL? Also when you get the error does it happen on the same slot or does it happen on a different slot every time? One thing that you can do is to check the magazines to ensure that the markers are on the slots. The markers are the clear parts on the front of each slot.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
