MD3620fc replacing controller battery

I have an MD3620fc showing battery status Not Available and I think I should replace it.

I have a replacement spare battery, but I'm not quite shure if just setting the controller offline will do the failover correctly of all Virtual Disks to the alternate controller, or if it must be done the change ownership manually. Anyway, is there any risk of I/O dusruption? Is it safe?

All Virtual Disks is showing Write cache: Enabled (currently suspended).

Hello,

The controller should go offline within a few seconds of confirming the operation. When it does, you'll likely see some messages about virtual disks not being on a preferred path. I would ignore those until the controller is online again.

Hello MCCcoelho,

Replacing the battery in a unit with multiple RAID controllers requires detaching the RAID controller with the failed battery, however you should experience no downtime if the other RAID controller is still functioning.

Before you start, make sure all the disk groups have been changed over to the working RAID Controller by using the PowerVault Modular Disk Storage Manager in the Logical View.

  1. In Physical view, select the RAID Controller to be removed
  2. Click on the Advanced menu and select Recovery > Place RAID Controller Module > Offline. Once offline, you may remove the RAID Controller.
  3. Replace the battery pack in the RAID controller and insert it back in place.
  4. Go to Recovery > Place RAID Controller Module and choose Online.
  5. After a few moments everything should return to normal.

Hello,

So, what you are saying is justo place the controller offline is not enough to complete the failover and change the ownership fo the virtual disks. You mean, I need to change the ownership first, and then place the controller offline in order to replace the battery. Is that correct?

Hello MCCcoelho,

You should not need to change ownership of your virtual disk.  All you should need to do is to place the controller offline and then confirm that all virtual disks are being accessed from the alt controller.  Once you have confirmed that all virtual disk are running on alt controller then remove the offline controller and replace the battery.

Hello DellEMCSupport.

Thanks for your response.

Is there any expectations about the amount of time for the controller go offline, based on the number of Virtual Disks? Is it fast?

STORAGE SUMMARY
Disk pools: 0
Virtual Disks on Disk Pools: 0
Disk groups: 7
RAID 5 Disk Groups: 7 Virtual Disks: 97
Access virtual disks: 1
Standard Virtual Disks (Used/Allowed): 97 / 512
Base: 97
Repository: 0
Thin Virtual Disks (Used/Allowed): 0 / 512

Thanks in advance.

MCCcoelho.

Hi, I Googled the battery (D668J) and it looks like it slides into the chassis. But I do not see where this would go. Is there a drawing or instructions? Also, does Dell sell these direct or do I need to go after-market? Thank you.

Hello Dell4Me2022,

This should help: Owner's manual Page 255 - Removing the RAID Controller Module Backup Battery Unit

https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/powervault-md3600f_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf

You call  Spare Parts -800-357-3355  and give them the part number you have:

D668J - Part Desc.:ASSY,BTRY,PRI,MD32XXMD32XXX
