Off-Host Backup with MD3820f

Hello All,

I want to configure off-host backup.

Please find below what I have :

 - Two servers (DELL R740) connected to a storage array (DELL PowerVault MD3820f) via 02 Fiber Channel SAN Switches Brocade SANB300.

 - A Backup Server connected to the Storage array via the Fiber Channel SAN Switches. The Backup Server is connected to a tape Drive via a SAS 6Gbps Cable.

 - The Backup Server contains Windows Server 2016 + Veritas Backup Exec 20 Gold for 5TB

The two servers (DELL R740) contain Windows server 2016 + SQL Server 2012 (there is no virtualization on those servers).

You can see all the details in the synoptic diagram below :

Normally VSS Hardware provider is needed to configure off-host backup.

I have read the Hardware Compatibility List (from Veritas website) for off-host compatibility with DELL EMC.

As you can see below, just the MD3000, MD3000i, MD3200, MD3200i, MD3220 and MD3220i are listed (They all support SAS and iSCSI interfaces) ; MD3820f (It supports Fibre Channel interfaces) is not listed.

Please find the link for the HCL from Veritas website https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/doc/BE_20_HCL

Does it mean that there is no VSS Provider for MD3820f ?

Does it mean that off-host backup is impossible with MD3820f ?

Thanks in advance.

Hello AngeloKabila225,

Here is the link to the Administrator guide & if you look on page 171 it states the following “Dell EMC is discontinuing support of the VSS and VDS hardware providers. For more information about deprecation, see the Dell EMC MD Series Storage Arrays Information Update. For supported software, see the Supported Management Software section in the Dell PowerVault MD Series Support Matrix at Dell.com/powervaultmanuals.
https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/powervault-md3400_administrator-guide_en-us.pdf

Here is the link to the support matrix as well.
https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md3820f_support-matrix_en-us.pdf

Off-host backups will still work with an MD3820f, however you will need to use a backup software that supports the MD3820f.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
