As a workaround you may consider removing the password, or choosing a different one, before upgrading the BIOS on your workstation.  Perhaps you are using a special character on it that is not understood by the firmware updater.  Do it only if Dell staff is not working with you to fix this bug—do not change/remove the password if they need you keeping the current set up to do some testing.  Obviously this one is an issue that should be fixed.

Precision 3630 Service Manual

Does the 3630 not have a PSWD jumper on the MB?  I wasn't expecting to find nothing about passwords or a password jumper in the service manual.  I found it in the Precision 3630 Tower Setup and Specifications Guide .  Search using "motherboard layout."  When MB image comes up, you'll also see a components list and be able to locate the jumper.  Tower Setup also has instructions for deleting or changing system password.  Search "deleting."  File name for setup guide will show as "...owners-manual..." and Service Manual shows as "...users-guide..."

With PC powered off and unplugged, PSWD jumper can be removed.  Power on.  When Windows logon appears, power off.  Password is removed.  Unplug again.  Reinstall jumper.

Reset BIOS Password On Your Dell

Hopefully this all helps.

@bradthetechnut

As I understand the first post on this thread, the OP knows the BIOS admin password.  It seems that he is unable to upgrade the workstation firmware because the firmware updater does not accept this password during the upgrade process—my advice is either deleting this password or changing it to a simpler one, to avoid a possible conflict with an special character used on this password, before upgrading the BIOS.

If he does not know the admin password he can delete it by means of the password jumper described on page 9 of the Setup and Specifications Guide you mentioned earlier.

Having to delete or create simpler password is of course only temporary.  After BIOS update, it should accept more complex password, even if for some reason special character rules changed.

Of course, it should be only a temporary workaround!  The problem described by the OP should be fixed.

Has there been a fix for this?

We are having the same problem trying to apply BIOS update 2.6.1.

We aren't using any special characters in the password.

The password works if you try to enter the BIOS at startup, but the updater program says the password is wrong.
