DELL PRECISION 7920 Freezing (Windows 10)

Guys,

We have a few of these models with 144GB of RAM. One with 160GB. Windows 10. From time to time (one machine experience this almost every day). There is an odd freezing where the user can move the mouse do some clicks, but nothing works correctly.

By default these builds came with less memory, we upgraded them and also removed the default GPU (small quadro) and replaced that with a RTX 2080 (with the latest drivers)

Now, I installed w10 clean (2 days ago) with the latest drivers from DELL's support page from here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/precision-7920-workstation/drivers

Everything works until when the user comeback the next day or the same afternoon the machine is in this state where nothing can be done (is not completely lock per se).

I've changed the power management settings, the NVIDIA power settings to not avail. I believe that this is a hardware issue presenting itself and affects the OS, or viceversa an OS issue (with the latest updates) malfunctionong due to some bug in this specific hardware, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

As of our last call on Thursday, there has not been any progress. However, enabling Hyper-V has allowed us to continue operating while we wait for a solution from Dell.

Hi,

On Thursday 5 I activated the hyper-v and until today the equipment has not been frozen. I will have the equipment in monitoring without making another change until Friday 20, if the system does not freeze again, I will close the case and this will have been the solution (hyper-v). I already reinstalled windows 10 pro operating system for workstations 1909, disable the power options available in the bios, restore factory settings in the bios, the only thing I still have to do was clone the computer with the other 7920 system that if it works correctly.

Update on Troubleshooting

I tested the Ethernet connection by swapping to fiber (No change).

I tested the Dynamic Tick workaround (NO change)

Currently testing Windows 10 ENT 1909 to double check if LTSC and/or LTSB some way are causing the problem. ( 2 machines)  Can everyone post up what version of Windows you are using?

Currently testing swapping all 128gb of memory to CPU_0, would like to disable second CPU but didnt find a option for this in the BIOS.

Currently testing Hyper V workaround (not sure how just turning this on will help any)

Well the Hyper V workaround didn't work for me. Not 100% sure what just turning on the option actually does to the machine. Within hours that test machine "Crashed". If some one can explain what just turning this option does please let me know.

Moved to next round of testing, Stock with windows update on internet instead of WSUS.

During my direct from DVD to machine install of WIN 10 ENT 1909 and WIN 10 LTSC 1809 on separate machines I noticed that the RAID/SATA controller drivers displayed in Device mangler differently.

The "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller" ended up being "Intel C620 series chipset CSME: IDE redirection - A1BC", but on  WIN 1909 "Standard SATA  AHCI Controller" is listed twice and on LTSC one is replaced with a RAID variant. My configuration does include a RAID controller but both machines are in Native SATA/AHCI mode in BIOS. I am using 1 512 SSD as (OS)SATA 0 and 2 1TB SSDs as (DATA)SATA 1 and 2 respectively

Here are the drivers that Windows update populated the machine with note the version numbers.

Hey Luke,

Engineering have asked if you could try this workaround and then test the stability of the system

  • From an admin command prompt, type the following command and hit enter: bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes
  • Restart the computer after applying it

If you could try that it would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to the results and then passing them back to engineering.

Hey Luke,

Have you had a chance to test the workaround I sent in my last email?

Confirm whether to use chrome when freezing, if yes, please try to turn off chrome's GPU acceleration

I had the same problem and bothered me for a long time. Finally, it was confirmed that the problem was caused by the GPU acceleration of Windows 10 and Google Chrome. Please turn off Chrome GPU acceleration, or solve the problem after using Firefox.

@Chip904 Hi, do you turn on HYPER-V in Windows?

Since we activated hyper v the system has not frozen. We had the system in monitoring until April 20, but the covid issue appeared

Yes I did. on 3/31/2020. So far no Freezes on my PC. However I just checked on another user and he stated that his has frozen up today. He runs intense 3d apps I.e. Navis, Revit....... But his only froze once today not 4 or 5 times. And I might add he told me Hyper-V has nothing to do with the issue. So, he may have taken it off. Smh... Mine is fine with it on. We have 15 of these 7920 machines. Lower intensity users get by but, higher GPU users freeze after setting these settings.PDF of changes we made

I too am having this exact issue.  I went through 3 7820s.  The 1st one I received died the day we installed.  The other 2, would randomly lock up.  No reason for the lock ups.  My Dell sales rep ended up sending me a 7920 and unfortunately, it too is doing it.  I've tried everything except for installing Hyper-V.

When i received this 7920 and it started locking up, I assumed at that point it had to do with my power.  I plugged it up in different locations, on different circuits, even purchased a $250 battery unit to plug it into to make sure the power was stable. No luck....

I hope Dell figures this out soon. These are expensive towers and as an IT Director, I don't need it locking up...  Looks really good on IT when they can't keep their own PCs operating effectively.
