DELL PRECISION 7920 Freezing (Windows 10)

Guys,

We have a few of these models with 144GB of RAM. One with 160GB. Windows 10. From time to time (one machine experience this almost every day). There is an odd freezing where the user can move the mouse do some clicks, but nothing works correctly.

By default these builds came with less memory, we upgraded them and also removed the default GPU (small quadro) and replaced that with a RTX 2080 (with the latest drivers)

Now, I installed w10 clean (2 days ago) with the latest drivers from DELL's support page from here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/precision-7920-workstation/drivers

Everything works until when the user comeback the next day or the same afternoon the machine is in this state where nothing can be done (is not completely lock per se).

I've changed the power management settings, the NVIDIA power settings to not avail. I believe that this is a hardware issue presenting itself and affects the OS, or viceversa an OS issue (with the latest updates) malfunctionong due to some bug in this specific hardware, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

We received a pre-release version of the latest BIOS revision that was just posted and can confirm that it fixes the issue. We've been running a test system for ~2 weeks with no issues.

I was surprised to find this recent thread.  I use my 7920 as a desktop and it is a little more than 2 years old.  I have had this problem, continuously, for 2 years, even with ProSupport.  They have changed the memory, the motherboard, the SD drives and reinstalled Windows several times (my current image is somehow MicroSoft instead of Dell, so I am waiting for 8 hours to rebuild my system once again).

So I was thrilled when they told me that engineering finally had a fix and I just installed the new BIOS yesterday.  Hopefully it works.

I have the same issue as well for several months.  If the lastest Bios updating works, please notice me! thank you all.

Dell should give us an explanation, because my T7920 is still freezing after I upgraded the bios to 2.63.

According to this https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-us/sln320231/precision-7820-7920-towers-intermittently-seeing-a-partial-lockup?lang=en The BIOS update is supposed to fix it. I have the 7920 as well and had this issue for months. I was hoping the update would fix it. Guess I will see...

I have been fighting with my 7920 for 6months+... Same freezing problem, also an issue not recognizing NVMe drives. Dell replaced motherboard which did nothing. I replaced CPU ($750 out of pocket) still freezes...still doesnt recognizing nvme drives properly. Replace Dell quad ultra speed card, etc, etc....literally $1000s wasted on this machine. Its absolutely garbage and will be the last Dell product I ever own.

No sure if it helps. I have a system that has not locked up for like 3 months. Previously was locking almost every day. I disabled all power management in the BIOS, and a lot more options (I do not remember all of the options), But I went onto the BIOS section by section and disabling all that is not actually needed (sorry, power management is not required, it's a feature) and dabbled into a lot of options and disabled a lot of tech in there also. Months later the machine is being used remotely without issues. Another system (where I didn't applied those same changes, because it was a test in the one I did, froze today). Hope it helps.

Dell T7920 I bought it last week too. I have the same problems in Windows 10. Mouse and keyboard freezes at short intervals. HID-compliant consumer control device Close and redefine in Device Manager.
The same problem persists even though I changed my operating system to Windows Server 2016.
So many people are in trouble, Dell Why doesn't it bring a solution for this problem...

The BIOS update to 2.6.3 did it for me. No more freezes.

The BIOS update to 2.6.3 old release ... I installed 2.8.1 BIOS update but freezing problem continuing ...
Is Solution Downgrade BIOS version to 2.6.3 ?

BIOS Update 2.6.3 Fixes the problems I listed in my troubleshooting. II have not changed my 7920's drivers/firmware since.

If you have the enginerring BIOS that was sent out for testing at the time of this being very hot a year ago when I first came across this problem than that too will fix the problem, but you machine's EDIDs might not populate correctly.

Sorry it took so long for me to finalize and get back.

I had this freezings at home, completely different workstation. That may be the new Microsoft Edge integrated in Windows 10 in combination with appstore.

The Microsoft Edge can be killed by deleting its binaries from System32 (see the Task Manager to figure out which exe file is it in, and delete all the similarly named exes there)

Removing MS appstore may also help

Hello everybody.
I also have a Dell Precision 7920 here on my Desk to troubleshoot and I think I found a solution.
At first I thought it is a wrong memory configuration (48GB with 2 CPU) but the freezes continued even decreasing the memory to 32 GB which is supported.

Troubleshooting a bit more, I had the feeling that I could force a freeze when accessing the second disk or e s p e c i a l, when accessing the second disk configuration in Windows.

I also found that LSA.exe is running with 3% CPU all the time.

My solution was to update the SAS Controller Firmware, Driver and Software. In my case it was a Mega raid 9440-8i but the firmware from the Broadcom website was not compatible due the controller seems Dell branded.
I downloaded everything from the Dell Support Website. The Firmware was 9441-8i. Updating was flawless.

After updating Firmware, Driver and Software(LSA). The System had no freezes anymore.

Not sure, why Dell does not let me post this when I write "e s p e c i a l".

Update: well I thought I have solved the issue but unfortuantely: Nope.

The freeze on our system here is caused by the Raid controllers Consistency Check.
When a consistency check is running, the system will freeze in short time.

We've replaced the MegaRaid Controller and 4TB HDD's without success (povided by Dell Pro Support after a long waiting time).
I've installed a fresh Windows 10 Test OS disk with the same issue.
Performing lot's of tests where all without success.

At one point the Test OS disk had no troubles and could do a consisteny check without freeze (took very long ofc).
Restarted a consistency check and could not see a freeze.
A Windows 10 update was performed (KB5003173), I thought this solved the issue. But on the live system disk I had no success. The Live system was 1909 and the Test System 20H2. First I installed KB5003169 on the 1909 system without success, then updated to 20H2 and KB5003173 but also without success.

A horrible System I think.

In the end, I just did a workaround:  Set each 4TB Data Disk as single Disk to a Raid0 Virtual drive and then do a Software Raid in Windows 10.
Not optimal, I mean... expensive Hardware.. but at least no consistency check from the Raid Controller and therefore no freezes.

I hope this helps someone.
