precision 3420 fan issues

Bought this precision sff used but its in great shape except the fan issue. has the nvidia quadro k620 but when playing games the gpu heats up to 82c plus. not the worst but hotter than im comfortable with. the prob is the fans dont ramp up. if i turn off fan cntrl in bios it stays nice and cool, dont know why its like this. i tried speedfan, dellfancmd dell fan utility hwinfo64. i can get them to work but the fans violently flutter up and down fighting with system. yes i used dellfancmd and cmd prompt to turn off ec fan control. for some reason it comes back on and starts a fluttering. its just a bit noisey with fans at full speed, but not fast enough to game with fan cntrl on. just hoping someone would be able to help out. thx ahead of time for any tips.oh latest bios flashed

We tried reaching you on a private message asking for the Service Tag number to ascertain the warranty but did not receive a response. Please feel free to reply to the private message whenever you are available.

Any updates here?

I have the SFF 3420 and am having similar fan issues. The CPU fan is stuck at about 1100 rpm and does NOT increase with CPU temp. When stress testing the CPU will hit 100C and the CPU fan is still stuck at 1100 rpm.

Latest BIOS loaded.BIOS diagnostics report no issues. BIOS fan control override box is UNCHECKED,

When using HWINFO64 I can manually control the CPU fan speed, only three settings, but all are too loud/fast for normal use.

One issue I see that in HWINFO64 under the EC, the CPU temp is reported as 193C all the time. Not sure if there is a legit hardware issue with the EC reading the temperature sensor in the CPU, or if HWINFO64 is just not reading some register correctly...?dell_ec.jpg

I'm not sure what I changed, but it now seems like the EC is properly controlling the CPU and chassis fan speeds now. When running Prime95 I see the CPU temp rise and a gradual speed up of both fans. I've rebooted a few times, and it seems to be OK each time. HWINFO64 is also reporting the correct CPU temperature under the "Dell EC" sensors. I'll update this thread if I figure out what changed, or if it changes back to the way it was.

After a COLD boot the EC properly reports the CPU temperature and properly controls the chassis and CPU fans. However, after coming out of SLEEP/S3 state the EC manfunctions -- CPU temp is not correct (reports 193C) and both fans are stuck at around 1100 rmp and do not increase in speed under load testing. So it looks like the EC is not being properly reset or initialized upon coming out of Sleep. Workaround is to prevent the system from going to sleep, but that is not ideal.

If it's under warranty, I would recommend to get the MB exchanged. This shouldn't be a normal situation, and thus means something is not like it should be and could go worse with time

This happens to my DELL Precision Tower 3420 also.  I find that using "hibernate" instead of sleep lets the fans work as they are supposed to.  This must be a defect in the BIOS or something in hardware that does not get reset when the PC comes out of sleep mode.

A better workaround to hibernate is to download and install Intel Ready Mode software from Dell and to enable Intel Ready Mode.  This replaces the standard "sleep" and seems to keep the CPU temp monitor and fan controls working.
