Precision 3620 confirm max CPU
Hi,
I have a second-hand 3620 and trying to work out the max cpu it can take.
It currently has an i7-6700 installed.
However, searching through the forums, I've seen machines with either 6th or 7th gen cpu's.
Is there a way I can find out if this machine can be upgraded to a 7th gen? i.e. provide the service tag?
Thank you.
Russell

Actually MS already gave a bit up under external pressure and officially said about considering to expand support to 7th gen and ryzen 1000.
Bottom line, there's still time for specs to change... it's too early to say it's an official dead end. Due to this, upgrading to 7th gen may actually make sense

This is a user to user public forum not Dell Support so don't ever post any personal info like service tags. Good thing you asked.
The users here might help but I would use the computer as is since it will not be able to upgrade to windows 11 according to this- Dell computers tested for upgrade to Windows 11 | Dell US
Check the manual Dell Precision Tower 3620 Owner's Manual

Though it's in the Optiplex section, some CPU's are shared. I invite you to check out @Philip_Yip's post here in regards to CPU's and Win11. You'll know what's relevant to you and what's not.

From the Precision 3620 Tech Guide:
By the way, it's not mentioned if you have the tower or the SFF.

No, completely different socket type among other things. Earlier in this thread, I attached the 3620 spec sheet with a screengrab of compatible CPU's.
Just the opposite is true also - if a PC can take a Ryzen, then it can't take Intel.
