Precision 5820 and AMD RX 5700XT

I have a 5820 with Windows 11 Pro installed. I had a nVidia Quadro K4200 before  and now I try to replace it with a second hand RX 5700XT. Windows boots no problem and even uses the native resolution of the screen (Dell 2408WFP) at 1920x1200. However, from the Device Manager, in the Display adapters, it shows AMD Radeon RX5700 XT with a question mark. Right click on it to bring up the property and it shows the device status:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I had reseated the video card many times, even switching between the 2 x16 slots and no luck. I thought maybe the card is the issue so I plug it into another home-build computer which was bought almost 10 years ago and it works there (Windows 11 Pro also)

Secure boot is not enabled in both machines. UEFI is.

Doesn't anyone have any suggestion to what could be the issue? Or something to try? Please let me know if any more info is need to help with the diagnose.

Thanks,

Kaman

This page at Helpdeskgeek may help. Have you tried to install the latest drivers either from Dell or at AMD?

I pretty much did all of those things in the link. BIOS updated, windows updated, latest AMD drivers installed. Installed in another computer etc.

The AMD driver installation will find the card but at the end of installation it will complain that  there is an issue with the card or something. A reboot after that didn't help either. I've tried using DDU to uninstall AMD and nVidia GPU drivers completely too. I've also tried the Factory Reset option during the AMD driver install. No luck either.

I don't know if it is the windows either. The issue started when I run Proxmox and try to pass the card to a VM, which ends up with no output at all from the VM. Hence I decided to install Windows 11 directly to eliminate complexity.

The fact that the card works perfectly in another computer makes me think the card is ok and it is something is with the Dell? Hence the reseat and swapping slots between the 2 x16, multiple times (the definition of insanity?). I even bought a 10-pin to dual 8pin pci-e cable to supplement the existing 8pin to 6-pin GPU cables thinking it may be the power issue. Still no luck. Also, using the original 8-pin cable, I was able to power a RTX 3070 (which requires two 8-pins vs the RX's 1 8-pin + 1 6-pin) using a 6-pin to 2 8-pin splitter.

Odd. I typed a long reply and it is not showing up. So I will try again.

I pretty much did all those things in the link already. BIOS update, windows update, amd driver install, trying on another computer.

During the AMD driver installation, it finds the card but at the end it complains about issue with the card. A reboot will not solve the problem. I even ran DDU to clean up AMD and nVidia drivers and still no luck. Also tried the 'Factory Reset' option during the AMD driver installation. No luck either.

I don't think it is Windows either, as the problem started when I tried to pass the card to a VM in Proxmox. There was no output at all from the VM. So I got rid of Proxmox and installed Windows directly to eliminate complexity.

The fact that the card works perfectly in a different PC makes me think the card is ok and that the issue is in the Dell? Hence I tried reseating and swapping between the 2 x16 slots multiple times (the definition of insanity?) to no avail.

The original Dell comes with only 425W so I replaced it with the 950W version. Is there a setting I need to change to activate the new PSU. All my testing are done using the new PSU though.

Also the computer comes with one 8-pin to 2 6pin pcie cable. The 5700XT needs 1 8-pin + 1 6-pin. So I connect one of the 6 pins to a 8-pin to 2 8-pin splitter. The same set up works with a RTX 3070. But just in case, I bought a 10-pin to 2 8-pin pcie cable to supplement the existing pcie cable. Still no luck.

This is the third time I'm trying to reply. I wrote a lengthy reply twice and both times for some reason they didn't stick.

Hi,

No I didn't find a solution. I tried a few things but some how I'm not able to post the results here.

Hi,
thank you for your answer.
Maybe the combination of the Dell Wokstation 5820 and the AMD RX 5700 graphics card is one of those rare combinations that just don't work, even though they should without a problem.
What I had tried so far without success:

> Update BIOS, use default settings, tried some settings which may affect PCIe
> Fresh Windows 10 with default and all DELL recommended drivers
> Microsoft GPU drivers and AMD GPU drivers
> tried all PCIe Slots on the Mainboard
> UEFI Boot

The RX 5700 is working fine on an older DELL Workstation 5810 (used this GPU there for three years without a problem)

allways getting the error code 43 on device Manager.

I don't know what else to try....

I fixed it.

Failure was the BIOS Version. I downgraded to BIOS Version 2.0.2 (20 Jan 2020) and now the Graphic Card is working without any Problem, no error in the device manager.

So i don't know which BIOS Version is the "breaking point" that will start not work proper with the Radeon RX 5700 (I had the latest BIOS installed). I'm fed up with testing. So, 2.0.2 is working fine!

Thank you Chino - As I mentioned, everything that can be updated is updated. Im running A34 as well as the latest 20th April update.

I will try the bios downgrade just in case its a factor. But I am wracking my brain about it. What could the issue possibly be.

Could you post guide on how to downgrade the bios? I will be trying it on my 5810. (I have a rx 6600 XT that has intermittent issues. All stats show up correctly but multiple passmark runs just keep giving me single digit scores and fps results but sometimes passes with flying colours. Everything possible to update is updated.

The others were trying older BIOS versions to fix compatibility issue.  Hoping that their T5820 system would recognize the RX 5700XT graphics card.

You do not have the same issue, your RX 6600XT was already working with the T5810.  It is more like a performance issue.  Unless your machine is not with the latest BIOS A34, then you may try updating to the latest.  But if you are flashing with older firmware, it may not fix current issue and could create new problem (incompatible ME, EC).  Maybe you should try to improve the RX 6600XT performance by updating the latest graphics drivers instead.

However, as your request, here is the latest BIOS A34 download page.  To download, you just click on the Download (blue button) and save it to your computer.  You can scroll down the page and click on Installation instructions for detailed steps to download and updating the BIOS.
