Precision T1700 (SFF) 32gb memory error.

Hello, I have a problem when installing four 8GB RAM (Micron 8GB DDR3L PC3L-12800E Unbuffered ECC) memories, the computer turns on and off looping until it loads the operating system. If I change an 8GB memory by a 4GB (pre-installed factory) the equipment works perfect. Precision T1700 supports up to 32GB of RAM and all of my RAM memories (forus 8gb Micron and two 4gb SK Hynix) are compatible and all were tested in Memtest without showing problems. Does anyone know why this happens? I'm thinking about to install an outdated bios.

Thanks.

Based on what I have read, when you go up to 32G, the memory needs to be ECC (Error Correcting), as opposed to non-ECC RAM. And I don't imagine you can mix and match non-ECC and ECC memory sticks, either. Which could leave you with a complete forklift of memory (4 new 8G ECC sticks) as opposed to adding 2 new incremental 8G sticks that are ECC and seating them with non-ECC existing sticks. Dell can correct me if I am wrong here but that is my understanding. Also, finding the ECC memory sticks is fairly difficult (to impossible it seems). And you will probably pay more for it. Your BIOS and Firmware need to be upgraded to use the ECC, since the system can generate faults when the checksums are incorrect on the memory.

Precision T1700 Spec Sheet

Quite true, non-ECC RAM can't be mixed with ECC RAM.  And 32GB is tops with ECC RAM.  32GB ECC RAM was already attempted though.

Before making sure you have the latest BIOS, try replacing the size 2032 CMOS battery if it's 5+ years old.  Then, if you still have to update BIOS, there's less chance of error.  A28 is the latest version from 2019.

@bradthetechnut Hello! My T1700 DIMM slots 1 and 3 do not appear to be working. I have 32gb ECC 1600MHz (4x8gb sticks) all matching Samsung. The memory appears to be good - I can interchange all four in slots 2 and 4. When I add memory to slots 1 and 3, it will not post. I get the amber power button flash of 2 then 3 flashes. I just replaced the motherboard thinking this was the issue. Fresh batteries did not help. BIOS is A28. Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

A few ideas:

1.  Not sure if this will help since the MB was already replaced, but you could try doing a BIOS reset (via the blue jumper) with all of the RAM installed.  How to Perform a BIOS or CMOS Reset and Clear the NVRAM on Dell Computers

2.  Make sure the 2032 battery is new.  No relying on battery that came with MB.  I've had to change the battery on every refurb PC I ever bought.

3.  Rarer, but it could be the CPU.  Yours wouldn't be the 1st instance that happened.  I take it you reused the same CPU?  Can probably save this one for last.

4.  Make sure you have the latest BIOS that's for the T1700.

5.  I don't recall if changing brands of RAM helped.
