T5500 - new memory/ram troubleshooting

hi everyone, my friend gave me his old T5500 workstation and I am a bit of a noob getting back into tinkering with desktop hardware. I have been trying and failing at upgrading the ram. What he gave me were 6 GB chips, with 3 on the riser and 3 on the main board. I went to Amazon and have bought three of the cheapest 4 GB patriot memory.

I have followed the service guide and so set up the memory with the 3x 4GB chips on the riser board, and the 6x 2GB chips on the main board. When I start up I get the 1-3-2 beep code and lights 1 and 3 are on. The video output never comes on so I am finding it difficult to troubleshoot. If I revert the configuration, and go into the bios, it does say there was a memory change in the log but not much else.

what do I do here? How long do I have to wait on start up? Is there some configuration process that will take a long time because I’ve basically added 12 GB of memory and changed the config?

Just to make sure, did you purchase Registered ECC RAM?

These multi processor workstations will not work with off the shelf consumer RAM

Sounds like the memory module in slot 1 has failed. Remove and replace it with the one in slot 2, and reboot.

Thank you James! This was the issue.

Because I couldn't get past the beep and show the video, last night I removed all the ram chips and put in just 1x new 4GB non-ECC chip on the riser DIMM1 and 1x new 4GB non-ECC on the mobo DIMM1. By doing this I was able to get to the screen which told me that non-ECC wasn't supported.

In the original config I was trying, I believe it was erroring because I was mixing RAM types (non-ECC and RDIMM), so it failed before launching the video. When I went with just the non-ECC, I was able to at least see this was the issue.

Never heard of this on RAM before today. Now I'm searching desperately for server RAM!

thanks
